What is the plantain plant like?

plantago major

El plantain It is one of those herbs that we can see growing in fields, whether cultivated or not, in all the warm and temperate regions of the world. It has large leaves and a rather low height, characteristics that make it a very interesting plant to have in pots. Yes, you read that correctly: in pots.

As it is perennial and also has medicinal properties, what better than to always have it close ... in case we ever need it. So Keep reading to find out what it is like, what properties it has and more 🙂.

What are the features?

Our protagonist it is a perennial herb Originally originating from Europe and Asia that has been introduced all over the world, except at the poles. Its scientific name is plantago major, although it is known more as plantain, greater plantain, millet, hare's ear, plantago, lantén, sietenervios or setecostas.

It develops an unbranched stem that reaches a height of between 30 and 50cm, from which a short rhizome emerges that is found below ground level. The leaves form basal rosettes with 3-6 longitudinal veins, and are oval. The flowers are produced in dense whitish-green spikes from spring to early fall (May to October in the Northern Hemisphere). The fruit is a pixidium (a type of dried fruit in the form of a capsule) inside which we find brown seeds.

How do you take care of yourself?

If you want to have it in a pot, we recommend that you provide it with the following care:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in summer, somewhat less the rest of the year.

  • Transplant: every 2-3 years.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists frosts down to -7ºC.

      Hi Wendy.
When you have a health problem, especially if it is serious like an infection, it is best to consult a doctor. The improper use of medicinal plants can not only be of no use, but it can also make our situation worse.
      A greeting.
