The strawberry plant is one of the most recommended to have in a flowerpot or in a small plot.. Due to its low height and easily manipulated size, it can become the perfect excuse for both children and the elderly to have contact with the world of gardening and, especially, a horticultural plant like this one.

So I'm not going to go into more detail with the introduction, and we're going to go into the article by explaining it to you. what are its characteristics and care.

What is its origin and its characteristics?

Strawberry plant

The strawberry plant, known as wild strawberry or wild strawberry and whose scientific name is Fragaria vesca. It is native to Eurasia and reaches 20cm in height. It is lively - it lives several years - stoloniferous. It forms a basal rosette of trifoliate leaves, with serrated margins, bright green on the upper side and paler on the underside. Creeping stems, called stolons, also emerge from this rosette, which produce adventitious roots from which other plants will emerge.

The flower stalks sprout from early spring (April in the northern hemisphere) until early summer (June in the northern hemisphere). Each one of them is composed of five white petals, five sepals and a score of yellow stamens. It is hermaphrodite.

The fruit is actually a thickening of the flower receptacle, the dots on it being the true fruits.

How do you take care of yourself?

To finish, here is a care guide:

  • Location: outside, in full sun. It can also be in semi-shade (as long as it has more light than shade).
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing medium (you can buy it here).
    • Garden or orchard: it is indifferent, but it must be rich in organic matter and have good drainage.
  • Irrigation: 3-4 times a week in the warmer months, and somewhat less the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from spring to summer with an organic fertilizer, such as guano or herbivorous animal manure (cow, goat). You just have to know that if it is in a pot it must be liquid.
  • Multiplication: by separation of stolons and by seeds in spring.
  • Rusticity: it resists well the cold of up to -7ºC.
