How do rose bushes reproduce by cuttings?

With the arrival of February, the ideal season for reproduce and take care of your rose bushes by cuttings, easily and quickly. In fact, you will only need a pair of scissors, a pot and a substrate. You got it? Well, let's get to work.

Step by step

The first thing you have to do is select from your rose bushes which one you want to reproduce. Once this is done, take some scissors -previously disinfected-, and cut some stems of the plant of an approximate height of about 20-25cm at least. These must be from last year or olderotherwise they would be too young to root. As a precaution, you can apply healing paste to each wound on your rose bush, in order to prevent fungi from making their appearance.

You can then proceed to plant the cuttings in the pot, burying them about 5-10cm. It is highly recommended that, before introducing them into the substrate, you thoroughly moisten the base and you impregnate her with rooting hormones. If you don't have or don't know where to get it, don't worry. The ash spread on the surface of the substrate will help roots sprout smoothly, as well as prevent pests from appearing that could endanger the cutting. As a substrate you can use the universal peat that you can find in any garden center, but you can also opt for perlite or vermiculite. Once you have it ready, water it and put it in a location where it won't get direct sun.

Aftercare

How are cuttings cared for? Protected from direct sun, you should only keep the substrate slightly damp. It is necessary to avoid that it dries, but also that it has a too high degree of humidity.

The rose bushes take root in a very short time; as a general rule they usually take about fifteen days. If you have doubts, after that time you can observe the drainage holes. Once a root sprouts, new ones soon appear! From then on, it will have ceased to be a cutting and will be on the right path to becoming a beautiful rose bush.
