We know onions as vegetables that are grown very frequently in home gardens as well as in gardens, since this is a food that has a wide range of culinary usesThey do not require much care and do not need so much space.
But apart from that, the season for its development is not very long, therefore it means that the we can harvest in the spring, then put them to dry and we keep them to eat them in the winter months.
Characteristics of onions
Onions have three main colors, white, red and gold, each with a flavor that differentiates them.
Apart from this, onions are divided into two types taking into account the crop, either long or short day. Onions that are long-day get this name, since they begin to sprout after 14 or 16 hours. On the other hand, short-day ones take about 10 or 12 hours.
Steps to plant onions
The first thing we have to do is choose the kind of onion we want to plant.
As with a large number of fruits, vegetables and greens, onions have many varieties of which we have to choose one, taking into account the season in which we are going to plant them.
Choose the way we want to plant the onions
There are usually two ways for this, the first through a bulb or seeds.
As well we can choose the option of transplanting themHowever, this is something that does not generate the best results and is usually more complicated, if we compare it with the first two options.
Take into account the right time for sowing
When we plant onions in cold weather, they can receive a lot of damage or use most of their energy in the development of flowers. When we plant the seeds, it is advisable to do it in an internal area and with about six weeks before the transplant.
This is a plant that we can sow abroad in the month of March or in the first days of April.
Choose the right area for sowing
The onion is not very demanding with respect to the conditions of the crop, however it has some preferences. It is important that the area has a lot of space as well as excellent lighting.
Prepare the land
For that we have to plow the same to about 15 or 16 centimeters deep and we add a layer of fertilizer that is phosphorous.
Dig the holes for the onions
We sow the onions in such a way that there is no more than 2,5 centimeters of soil left on top of the bulbs or seeds; when the bulb is deeply buried, its growth will have many limits.
We need to leave a space of about 10 to 16 centimeters between each of the bulbs and if they are seeds, the space has to be about 2,5 to 5 centimeters. Once the onions start to grow, we can transplant them and increase the distance between each one.
Planting the onions
To perform this step we place the seeds inside the holes and we cover them with an approximate of 1,25 to 1,5 centimeters of soil.
We can help ourselves with our hands or with our shoes to be able to flatten the soil on top of the onions a bit. To end we have to add some water and we will only have to give it the best care for its growth.
It is important to note that when the onions are transplanted need more water, if we compare them with seeds or bulbs.
Harvest
When the onions are ripe, we will observe a golden color. When this happens, we have to bend the stem until it is lying down so that the nutrients go only to the bulb. After about 24 hours, this stalk will turn brown and this is the right time to harvest the onions.
