kiwis

Would you like some kiwis? They are delicious, and now in summer help us hydrate due to its high water content. And they are even tastier when picked directly from the plant.

In order to taste them, it is necessary to know how to care for a kiwi tree. Read on to find out the needs of this wonderful garden plant.

Kiwi plantation

The scientific name of kiwi is actinidia chinensis, a species that can be confused with a tree, as you can see in the image, but which is actually a climbing shrub. It is native to China, but is currently cultivated in much of the world. It has simple, deciduous leaves, green on the underside and a darker tone on the upper side. To get fruits, we need a marching specimen and another female, or we can acquire self-pollinating kiwifruit, which although they have a higher price, we will only need one to savor the fruits.

Another option is the sow your seeds in spring, but because we will have to wait around 7 years to be able to take advantage of its first harvest, it is not recommended, unless we want to experiment and / or waiting is not a problem 🙂.

Kiwi needs being in an area exposed to direct sunlight so that its fruits ripen properly. It will also be essential that we water it very often, especially if we are in summer or we live in a dry climate, but avoiding that the earth, which must be porous, remains flooded.

When planting it in the garden, or in a pot, we have to place a tutor by which I can climb. In this way, it will have an optimal development, which will guarantee an excellent harvest.

In winter you can carry out training pruning, which will consist of going trimming those branches that grow too large upwards. To make harvesting fruits more comfortable for us, it is recommended to have a kiwi plant no more than 2m high. In this season it is also important protect it from intense frosts, introducing it indoors if the temperatures drop below 2 degrees Celsius below zero, or otherwise with a thermal blanket or greenhouse plastic.

Hello, I bought a kiwi tree already polymerized. The sun plays most of the day, I live in a Mediterranean climate. I do not appreciate any pests and the pot is covered with straw to keep humidity.

However, I observe that all the leaves are drying on the outside, leaving a brown margin that gives it a rather sick appearance ...

    What could be due ...

Thank you very much for your help.

    regards

      Hi Andi.

Do you know if they had it protected before in the nursery? Is that if so, you may be burning from the sun due to lack of habit.

In the event that it is already in a sunny area, do you have a plate placed under the pot? If so, you should remove any excess water after watering. Stagnant water can rot the roots.

On the other hand, if you wet the leaves when watering, it may be that they are being damaged as a result. When watering, you have to pour water on the ground, only on the ground.

      Greetings.
