How to care for hanging succulents

Succulents in general are very resistant plants and so varied that you will always find one that you fall in love with (or many). The problem is that we tend to think of these plants as normal ones, and that implies giving them a series of care that, sometimes, is not what they really need. And that's why they end up having a bad outcome.

Since we don't want that to happen to your plants, we want to give you a practical guide so you know how to care for hanging succulents. Much of what we will say also applies to succulents in general, so keep that in mind if you have or are going to buy one.

Location

Succulents have always been said to be plants that resist sun exposure very well. In other words, you can put them directly in the sun and nothing will happen. And it is so, but we do not advise it.

Whether you have hanging or "normal" succulents, it is best to place them in places where there is a lot of sun, but not directly.

The reason is that the sun's rays all they are going to do is dry up the water deposits that the plant accumulates, in such a way that it dehydrates much faster. And although that would not be a problem because you could water it more often and that's it, the fact that the plant dries so quickly can affect its health.

Therefore, in the case of hanging succulents, it is better to have them in bright areas but not in direct sun.

A trick so you know if your plant is burned by sunlight is if you notice that the leaves are turning reddish. If so, the best thing you can do is put it in another shady spot. If it lacks light, you will see that the leaves turn pale, and that will imply that you must put it in a place where it gives more light.

Temperature

Succulents are plants that they tolerate heat very well, and in a way also the cold. Of course, you have to protect it from frost and snow that can burn it completely.

Succulent

Earth

One of the care of hanging succulents is the soil that you are going to use. It is very important that it is nutritious, but also very draining. Therefore, we recommend that you use a substrate mixture with a most draining part (gravel or similar) that helps the roots of the plant breathe, as well as that the water does not accumulate in it and rot the roots.

Some species do not need as much nutrient to survive and thrive (there are many that can live in poor soils) but if you can provide some nutrition, so much the better.

Irrigation

Almost all succulents (if not all) are characterized by taking the same care with regard to watering: they need very little.

When you over water these plants you only end up killing them because the roots rot. On the other hand, if you only water once in a while, when you see that the soil is completely dry, you will make the plant feel much better.

In the case of hanging succulents, when watering them you can use a special watering can (with a long neck) so you don't have to take it down. The problem is that this way you will not see if the plant needs watering or not, nor if it is watered properly. And add to that that you will have to put something to collect the water that will come out from below.

Fertilizer

Many of those with hanging succulents use compost to give their plants greater health. But beware; If you use a soil with a lot of nutrients, compost may not be necessary.

If the plant is growing, it would be good apply it once a month for a while (not forever). The best are specific or organic fertilizers, for example, compost for cacti.

Subjection

One of the unique characteristics of hanging succulents is that, to suspend them in the air, you have to use a clamp for it. Normally this is done through ropes, which they sell to put the pot and protect it. However, something that is not said is that, as the plant grows and the branches come out, the ropes can limit development, or cause the branches to develop inadequately.

To avoid it, what you have to do is check, at least once a month, how the plant is doing, if the new branches can grow without limitations or, on the contrary, the ropes are disturbing. If that happens, maybe you can vary the location of the strings or, if you can't, put the branch in such a way that it doesn't break or force it to grow in a certain way.

Multiplication

Multiplication of hanging succulents

The reproduction of hanging succulents it is exactly the same as with non-hanging succulents. All you have to do is cut a stem, put it in a shady area so that the wound closes and plant it with substrate for succulents (you can even plant it in the pot itself to make it more leafy).

At the beginning, in these cases, it is better to water by spraying so that there is not so much water in the soil and it can rot the beginning of the roots.

As you can see, the care of hanging succulents is not, at all, complicated to carry out. In return, if you take good care of it, your plant will grow and develop in an incredible way. Do you already have one in your house?
