How to care for petunias

Lilac flower petunia

Hello again! If this morning we saw how to fertilize our plants with natural products, now we continue with some very popular flower plants to have on balconies in planters, or in the garden. Its flower is simple..., but sometimes the simple is the most beautiful. Of course, in this case it is. Do you want to discover how to care for petunias?

Well, take a look at what I'm going to tell you next, and you will get some very beautiful specimens.

Petunia

I love these plants, because their flowers have very different colors: pink, lilac, bicolor, red ... They are great! And, in addition, you can combine them as you like, regardless of whether you are going to plant them in the ground or in a pot. But you should know that petunias are sun lovers, so you should place them where they can receive as much direct light as possible, since otherwise their flowers will not develop correctly, and it is even likely that the plant does not have the energy to open its flower buds.

As a substrate I recommend that you use a universal one for garden, especially if you live in a rather dry climate, as they require frequent waterings, daily or every two days if the climate is warm, as they are not very resistant to drought. But if the rainfall in your area is usually abundant, add to this land a little perlite (10% will be enough) and put a layer of clay balls or volcanic clay inside the pot. You can also fertilize them with natural fertilizers or with specific fertilizers for flowering plants from spring to early autumn.

Although no major pests are known, it is they must be protected against mollusks -snails and slugs- with specific products, as they love their leaves. It can also be affected by aphids y Red spider, but they can be easily prevented with natural repellants, spraying them from time to time with Neem oil or a garlic infusion in the early morning or evening.

Petunias withstand the cold reasonably well, however they are usually grown as annuals because older specimens have a hard time having completely healthy flowers. It is because of that it is recommended to renew them every season, something you can do by buying new plants or ... sowing their seeds -which you will find in any agricultural warehouse or nursery- during spring.

    Hello Maria.
To get seeds from the plant you have to wait for the flowers to wither. You will see that the petal (called corolla) that forms them fall off, revealing a green "bud". The seeds will be ready when the sprout turns brown, something that will happen towards the summer.
Greetings and have a nice weekend!
