How to create a natural border for a garden

Shrub hedge

When looking to have a garden as natural as possible, trying not to include too many artificial elements such as furniture, sculptures or fountains, it is interesting to create borders with plants. These beings will be the ones that give joy and life to a land; Furthermore, if we have a garden they will serve as allies since they will attract pollinating insects, such as bees.

But How to create a natural border for a garden? What do we have to take into account when creating one?

Delimit the area where you will have the natural border

Land

This is the first thing you have to do. It is important to know where the natural border or hedge will be placed and what shape it will take. For example, it can be curved, straight or placed in such a way that the soles are zigzagged. Everything will depend on your preferences and needs as well as the available land itself.

To delimit the area, you can drive - not too deep - iron rods, wooden sticks or similar, use stones, or draw the line that will define the edge with natural paint.

Decide which plants you are going to put

In the nurseries you will find a wide variety of plants: evergreen or deciduous, with showy or not so cheerful flowers, rapid growth or slow,… If you are in a hurry to create a natural border, it is highly recommended to choose fast growing plants such as laurel (evergreen), polygala (evergreen), Syrian rose (deciduous) or flower quince (deciduous). On the contrary, if you are not in a hurry, you can create a nice hedge of conifers (cypress, yew, yours).

Don't plant them too close together

We know that you would love to have a finished natural edge that was functional from almost day one, but when working with plants you have to be patienteven with fast growing ones. So that problems do not arise in the future, it is necessary to know the adult dimensions that they will have and plant them taking this into account. For example, if it is a species that measures 1 meter in diameter, the specimens have to be planted 0,50m apart.

Enjoy your plants

Once you have them planted, it's time to enjoy them, watering them, pruning them whenever necessary, and why not? Taking pictures to show them off and, incidentally, see how they grow as time goes by.

Did you find it interesting? 🙂
