Have you ever seen such a beautiful flower? Its beauty is such that there have been several people who thought that it was simply a drawing made by a painter. But the truth is that, fortunately for us, it is a real plant, which will surely make more than one fall in love ... or am I wrong?
Let's see how to grow the fleur de lis, and be able to enjoy its beauty every season.
It is known by the botanical name of Sprekelia formosissima, and is originally from Mexico. It grows to a height of between 20 and 50cm; characteristic that makes it a excellent potted plant -both indoors and outdoors- or to have in small garden plots. In addition, it is one of the most sought after bulbous among collectors for its extraordinary beauty.
It has a elegant red flower composed of six petals, and some linear green leaves. It requires simple maintenance; so much so that we will only have to put it in a location where it receives direct sun, use a substrate with a little perlite, water it two or three times a week and protect it from frost.
The most reliable reproduction method is by bulb division during the dormant period of the plant, which is situated in autumn and winter in the northern hemisphere. We will remove the plant from the pot, and remove all the soil that we can, until we see the bulbs. Next we will only have to separate them carefully, and plant them in individual pots or in the garden.
If you want to choose to sow the seeds, once the flower has been pollinated you will see that the petals will fall, exposing a drupe (like a capsule) of green color that will contain them. To sow them, you have to wait for the drupe to mature, turning dark brown. Collect the seeds, and sow them in a seedbed with peat and vermiculite in equal parts. In a very short time you will have new plants.

Hello Monica, I have looked for seeds or bulbs of Flor de Lis but I cannot find anything. I am in Bogotá, Colombia. Do you know where I can go? Or could I pay you a shipment?
Hi Orlando.
We are not dedicated to buying and selling. See if you can get them on ebay 🙂
Luck!
Hi! I have a pot with many fleur-de-lis bulbs and I think that is why it is becoming wilted and does not flower. Can I transplant them at this time of year? I'm from Misiones (not a cold area)
Hi Alejandra.
By »many» how many do you mean? And what size pot is it?
Anyway I tell you that the ideal is to plant one in a pot of about 13cm in diameter, or two if it is 20cm. If there are more, the plants will not be able to grow well and will barely flower.
You can transplant them as long as they are not flower.
Greetings.
Thank you Monica. I'm glad, I thought I gave only one, now I wait to see if it gives more. It is so beautiful, it seemed to me a miracle that it had blossomed; Until now a single flower is wonderful, very appropriate for coats of arms and shields of nobility, it is so elegant.
It s wilted and I was sad when it did. Thanks again, I look forward to another miracle. A darling
Thanks to you, greetings 🙂.
Hello Monica: I would like to know which is the ideal fertilizer, since I have had bulbs for several years and they do not flower, I am in Argentina, they receive a lot of sun, they are in pots .. thank you
Hi Helen.
I recommend you pay them with liquid guano, since its effect is fast. Of course, it is important to follow the instructions specified on the packaging, since otherwise the bulb could perish.

I would like to know why my fleur-de-lis does not bloom. I have them in a pot of 65 in diameter and 80 in height. I have about 12 bulbs outside, it reads the sun all day long.
Thank you
Hello Mario.
Don't worry: sometimes they take a little longer. I have one and now it begins to take leaves: s We will have flowers at the end of the summer, for sure

Hello!!! I have four plants transplanted into a 25 x 25 cm and 30 cm deep pot. The sun gives them all day, but I see that the development is very slow. Will they flower? ... or do I have many plants per pot? Thank you!!!
Hello Gabriel.
Yes, you have many in a pot 🙂
Now that they are still developing, I recommend putting just two in the container. This way they will be able to grow better and flourish.
A greeting.

I have 12 lily flowers in pots. Some bulbs are many years old and they always bloom in November. This year only one bloomed. What could have happened? What should I do? I live in Argentina
Hi Elsa.
They may have outgrown the pot, or the soil may have run out of nutrients.
In any case, I recommend a change of pot and new soil.
Greetings.
