How to make a nice little garden

Lovely japanese garden

Do you have a rather small piece of land and would you like to bring it to life? Well you can do it, yes. It is not necessary to have many meters of plot to be able to enjoy a piece of nature; In fact, if you can create real wonders in a single planter, what cannot be achieved with, for example, 50 meters of land?

If you dream of being able to leave the house and feel the aroma of the flowers, listen to the leaves moving with the wind and enjoy your hobby, Below we will offer you many tips and ideas so that you know how to make a nice little garden.

Prepare the ground

Remove the grass

Removing grass with a hoe

It is very important that, before even making a draft with what we want the garden to have, we prepare the ground, starting with removing the grass. As it is a small piece of land, we can do it with a hoe, but we can also do it with a walking tractor, which will also allow us to do two jobs in one: remove the grass, and remove the earth, thus allowing it to aerate.

Then we have to remove the stones, especially the big ones. Plant roots often have a hard time rooting in very stony ground. If we have precisely such a plot, with many stones everywhere, we will not worry: we will be able to plant cactus and other plants succulents.

Level and fertilize the ground

Organic fertilizer powder for the soil

Once we have the land without any grass, it will be time to put a layer of about 4cm thick of organic fertilizer. Just after, we will level the ground with the help of a rake, mixing it with the compost. It is not necessary to obsess over that it is perfect: it will be enough if it looks good to our eyes.

Make a draft

Either on paper or with a computer program, it is highly recommended to make a draft, since that way we will know what we want to put and where, and most importantly: how it would look. For it, we have to know how many meters we have available, how long each side is and what shape it has.

With all this, we can begin to take a look at the plants and include them in the draft.

Find out what plants you can put

This is a job that has to be done, yes or yes. As much as we want, we cannot put all the plants that we like because the available space is limited. So that problems do not arise in the future, it is convenient to visit nurseries, garden stores, read this blog;),… in short, find out about the species that we can put in our small garden.

To make it easier, here is a small selection of articles in which we recommend plants for small gardens:

Install the irrigation system

Drip irrigation in the garden

Irrigation is a task that every gardener or gardener must carry out, because without water the plants would not survive. To prevent them from drying out, the irrigation system must be installed. But which? For a small garden, we recommend any of these:

  • Hose irrigation: is the traditional method. With a hose and a built-in water gun, it is possible to ensure that all the liquid that comes out is used by the plants.
  • Drip irrigation: if the land has a tendency to erosion, and if we also live in an area where rainfall is very scarce, drip irrigation is our best option. It allows us to always have the soil slightly damp, and in addition, we can also use it to fertilize the plants.
  • Exudation tape: they are pipes of porous material that distribute water through the pores. They keep the soil moist, and are highly recommended for watering trees.

Plant the plants

Pine plantation on land

Now that we know how we want our garden to be, we must make it come true. It is time to plant the plants in the site that we have chosen for them. For it, at the beginning of spring we will put on some gardening gloves, we will take the hoe and we will make a planting hole It will have to be more or less deep depending on the height of the pot and the plant in question.

For example, if they are trees or palms, it is convenient to make holes about 10 centimeters, at least, deeper than we would make them, since this will cost them less to root; On the other hand, if they are flowers, shrubs or the like, this will not be so important because these types of plants adapt faster -usually- although the wind blows strongly in that winter, it is most likely that nothing will happen.

After making the hole, we mix the earth extracted from it with 30% organic compost and plant it in such a way that it is about 0,5-1cm below the ground level. Finally, we make a tree grate (a kind of barrier around the plant that serves to prevent the water from being lost) with the same soil, and we water it thoroughly.

Incorporate some furniture

Garden furniture

Every garden, no matter how small, can have at least one deck chair or table set with matching chairs. We can put them in a shady corner, next to a tree for example. In these articles there is much more information about garden furniture that will help us to know which we should choose:

Or, if at the moment there are no tall plants, we can choose to put a wooden pergola or a tent. It can be very, very good:

Nice, right? While the trees and palm trees grow, if we want to enjoy the outdoors surrounded by the Green we can do it without any problem, because then we cover that pergola with small climbers like jasmine, and we would surely have a very pleasant time.

And ready. We will already have our garden, which may be very small, but it will undoubtedly be beautiful. Now it only remains to take care of it so that it continues to look spectacular 😉.

After reading the article "How to make a small and beautiful garden", my students of the last grade of secondary education have got down to work and are already working on the preparation of a land of approximately 400 square meters, their recommendations.
    We are very grateful
