How to make a succulent garden

Agave attenuata

All the succulents They are plants that, due to their origin, do not require as much maintenance as the rest, since they are very resistant to pests and diseases. They acquire very varied shapes: rounded, oval, bushy, arboreal, with spiny, long or short leaves ... Given such a wide variety, it is relatively easy to get a desert at home.

However, several things must be taken into account so that plants can grow well. Therefore, I am going to explain to you how to make a succulent garden.

Improve the terrain

Volcanic rock

Succulents grow in well-drained soil, so the first thing to do is improve ours if it doesn't drain the water fast (after two seconds after watering) or if it has a strong tendency to compact, as would be the case with clay soils. If this is not done, the risk of the root system rotting is high. So how do you do it?

The ideal would be to pass the rototiller throughout the garden, and then mix the soil with a thick layer of about 5cm of perlite. But it can also be done in the following way: mixing the soil from the planting holes with perlite or clay balls.

Take advantage of the stones and rocks

As you can see in the image, succulents do not really need a lot of soil to grow, and can even develop on stones. So if you have very rocky terrain, don't worry! Put a few succulents or cacti, and you'll see how it changes 🙂.

Combine succulents with similar plants

Some Echinocactus grussonii, Agaves, maybe some Yucca ... All these plants combine very, very well, and require the same care (sun, and regular watering 2 or 3 times a week). Yes indeed, Make sure the ones that grow the most (columnar cacti, Yuca, Dracaena, Agave) have enough space to develop.

Cover the ground with sand

As a final touch, it is highly recommended cover the ground with decorative sand, so that the plants feel as if they were in their place of origin.

What do you think of these ideas? You have others? If so, do not hesitate to leave them in the Comments 🙂.
