Now furniture made with pallets is very fashionable. We can buy them at DIY department stores, but we also have the option to create them ourselves. Wooden pallets are very inexpensive and durable, an ideal combo for our sofa. We will only need our hands, a little creativity, materials and textiles. The latter may cost a little more, but they will be the most expensive of the sofa.

How many pallets does it take to make a sofa?

It takes at least three pallets to make a sofa

Before explaining how to make an easy pallet sofa, let's talk about what these materials are. These are supports, usually made of wood, whose use in industries is based on the transport of merchandise. In turn, the pallets, also called pallets, guarantee the care of the merchandise during the trip.

If our objective is to use these materials to create a sofa, either for exterior or interior, the number of pallets required will depend on the size we want it to have, which in turn will depend on the space we have available. However, we can assure you that the minimum number of pallets needed to create a basic sofa is three: Two for the base and one for the backrest. Regarding the size, it is also important to take into account the type of pallet that will suit us best, as they are of different dimensions. We will comment on them below.

Pallet types

As expected, the pallets can have different measures, since companies carry out different types of loads, the transports where they will be distributed are variable, the size of the merchandise is not always the same, etc. However, there are a total of two standard measurements that define the most common types of pallets:

  1. Euro pallet: They are the pallets that are used mainly in Europe. The measurements of these are 1200 x 800 millimeters.
  2. Universal: Universal pallets are mostly used in America and Japan. Its measurements are 1200 x 1000 millimeters.

Anyway, we can find many other pallets of different sizes, especially today that furniture made with these woods is very fashionable.

Now that we know the measurements that the pallets can have, it will be easier for us to calculate how many we may need for the sofa we want to make. It is important to consider how many people we want to be able to sit on it, but also to be realistic and measure well the space we have available to place it.

How to make a sofa out of pallets?

Making a sofa with pallets is very economical

Now that we are more or less clear how many pallets we need, we are going to explain how to make an easy pallet sofa step by step.

  1. Sizes: First of all, we must measure the space we have available in order to know the maximum size that the sofa can have.
  2. Pallets: Determine how many pallets we need and get them.
  3. Set the model: Find or create a sofa model according to our style and taste.
  4. Sand: Using a sandpaper you have to unify all the pallets. So we can also get rid of splinters. It is important that they are all the same so that the final result is even.
  5. Paint: Once sanded, it is time to paint or varnish the pallets. For this we will choose the color we want for our sofa. In the event that our intention is to place it outdoors, we must choose weather-resistant paint and / or varnish.
  6. Back: Then we will have to cut one of the pallet wood to place it as a backing. Using two wooden boards, for example from the same cut pallet, we can create the backrest even slightly inclined to make it more comfortable. It is advisable to re-sand the area of the cut.
  7. Assemble the sofa: To assemble the sofa we will need nails and an electric screwdriver or a hammer. Since we will cut the last row of lumber, there will be two loose boards at the bottom of the pallet. With the screwdriver we must remove the middle one and place it right where the one we have cut was.
  8. Cushions: For greater comfort, it is best to place cushions on both the base and the backrest. To prevent them from moving, we can opt for cushions with cords and thus tie them to the pallets.

Support

Before placing the cushions, you can not miss the support for the sofa. We will take the boards that we have cut to make a support on both sides of the backrest pallet. To do this, we will make a diagonal cut in the upper part of the two boards. Thus, the lower part will be in the rear area of the seat. The size depends on how inclined we want the backrest to be.

Then it is time to join the backrest with the pallet that we will place on the seat, supporting the backrest on the back support so that it is diagonally. But beware, We must not overdo it so that it is not too inclined. Finally, it remains to join the last two pallets at the bottom of the sofa, that is, just below the seat. This way the furniture will not be too low and it will be more comfortable for us to sit on it and get up.

Another very nice and practical option for the base of the sofa is to put wheels on it. So we can move it as long as we need it and without any problem. For this we will have to join the pallets with metallized plates. These can be purchased at hardware stores. We can also be inspired to create other types of wooden furniture, such as pallet chairs.

As you can see, creating a nice and cheap sofa is not very complicated. It just takes a little time, a few tools, and creativity. To get ideas, you can be inspired by different models of sofas and imitate their structure. If you have a little more space, a corner sofa can be very cool, whether on the terrace, on the balcony, in the garden or in the living room. So put some imagination in it and put pallets together!
