How to have an ecological garden?

An ecological garden is one that does not harm the environment, and that it is designed with plants that can live without problems in our area, taking into account the meteorological conditions and those of the terrain itself.

But how to do it? This type of garden requires a different approach than making a conventional garden, so if you want to have a very special green corner, then we are going to tell you how you can achieve it.

Choose resistant plants

It is the most important. Plants that resist the climate you have in your area without problems are the most recommended, because their water needs will be much less than those that are not. To identify them, you can go to visit the botanical gardens that are closest to you, and then to the nurseries to acquire those that you like the most.

Once at home, you must place them in the proper location. Here is an orientation guide:

  • Trees- Many prefer to be in direct sunlight, but there are exceptions, such as maples.
  • Shrubbery: full sun or semi-shade.
  • Plants grown for their flower (gazanias, bulbous, daisies, etc.): it must give them the sun at least 4 hours / day.
  • Palms: most grow in full sun.
  • Succulent (cactus and succulents): in full sun.
  • Climbers: direct sun or semi-shade.

Attracts beneficial animals

An ecological garden without biodiversity would not be such. Pollinators (bees, wasps, ants), as well as other larger animals such as birds, have to be part of this paradise. So, to attract them what you can do is plant many brightly colored flower plants in different areas, and it may even be interesting to place houses or nests in different places.

But also it is very important to take care of the plants using natural products, since most of those that we can find in the nurseries are very toxic for the animals that live or want to live in the garden. The Neem oil, Potassium soap or the ash they are just some of the most effective natural insecticides.

Upholstery plants as a substitute for grass

Nasturtium

Tropaeolum majus (Nasturtium)

The lawn requires a lot of maintenance: it must be cut regularly, watered often and treated with products to avoid being affected by pests or diseases, therefore it is not recommended in ecological gardening. But that's not a problem: there are upholstery plants or ground covers, like the sea alderAlyssum maritimum), Serpol (Thymus serpyllum), or the Capuchinas (A larger trophy) that are resistant and very beautiful, capable of creating an incredible natural carpet.

Other alternatives to grass

If the carpet plants do not convince you, you can always put pine bark, stones or gravel. It is very beautiful, since it enhances the beauty of the plants that you already have in the garden.
