How to plant a laurel

Laurus nobilis

El laurel It is a tree or large shrub that is highly appreciated for its resistance to drought and for the pleasant flavor that its leaves leave on dishes, such as in rice soup. In addition, it is a very ornamental plant, even being used to create fantastic hedges of different heights. However, sometimes we want to have one and we don't know how much space it needs.

If you are one of them, don't worry. Let's know how to plant a laurel in the garden.

To know where we have to place it, we need to know what its dimensions will be once it reaches adulthood; in this way, we will avoid more than one upset. The laurel is an evergreen tree (that is, it renews its leaves throughout the year) that can measure up to ten meters in height, with a dense crown up to 4m in diameter. Now, it is also important to say that it tolerates pruning quite well, so if we are interested in keeping it with, for example, 4m high and a 2m crown, its branches can be trimmed towards the beginning of spring.

That said, now we have to go find a place for him in the garden. As it is perennial and has large leaves, it can be placed near the pool, since it also has no invasive roots. But we will not be able to put anything underneath or around it, as it is an allelopathic plant; This means that it emits a gas that can inhibit the growth of plants that are close to it.

So, the ideal is find an area where the sun shines a lot directly, and that it is at least 30cm away from another plant, just in case. It is true that there are many that can grow near the laurel, such as dimorphic or gazanias, but it is not recommended to put any just below as it could not hold much.

Once we have chosen the site, we will make a 1m x 1m hole, and we will mix the garden soil with universal substrate for plants. Thus, we will ensure that it has good drainage, in addition to the nutrients it will need to grow. When it is, we introduce the tree in it, and fill it with the mixed earth.

After giving it a generous watering, you can put a tutor so the wind can't twist it.

And ready. We already have a beautiful laurel 🙂.
