Alfàbia Gardens

Hedges are essential elements in many gardens: They help to have the different areas very different, to enjoy the place more without having to worry about unwanted glances, and even stop the wind, achieving that a great variety of plants can have an optimal growth and development.

However, in order for them to fulfill their role it is necessary that they have a good start, so I am going to explain to you step by step how to plant hedges.

Types of hedges

Hedges

Not all plant species grow equally fast or to the same height. To know how far they should be planted, it is first important to know how long the bushes we choose for the different types of hedges are going to measure.

Border shrubs

Borders are used to border roads. They are less than 0,5 meters tall and should be planted about 25cm from each plant. Some most used species are:

  • Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana'
  • cineraria maritima
  • Euonymus fortunei
  • Lavandula angustifolia
  • Teucrium fruticans

Shrubs for low hedges

Low hedges can be put, for example, around the picnic area. They measure between 0,5 and 1m in height, and are planted about 40cm from each plant. Some most used species are:

  • Buxus sempervirens
  • Coprosma repens
  • Eleagnus pungens 'Maculata Aurea'
  • Hypericum calycinum
  • Ligustrum ovalifolium

Shrubs for medium hedges

Medium hedges are highly recommended to put around the pool. They are between 1 and 2 meters high, and are planted about 50cm between bushes. Some most used species are:

  • Arbutus unedo
  • Cotoneaster lacteus
  • Cupressus sempervirens
  • Viscose dodonea
  • Hibiscus rosa sinensis

Shrubs for tall hedges

The tall hedges are those that will protect the home. They are over 2m tall and are planted between 1,5 and 2m between them. Some most used species are:

  • Cupressus arizonica
  • Laurus nobilis
  • nerium oleander
  • Taxus baccata
  • thuja plicata

Plant well aligned and straight hedges

Banco de madeira

When we have decided what types of hedges we are going to put in and the bushes that we will use for that purpose, it will be time to buy them and then plant them in autumn or spring. So that they are straight and aligned, It is highly recommended that you place a tutor at one end, another at the other end, and hook a rope on both so that it is straight (you can help yourself one meter). Then you have to:

  1. Make a ditch about 40-50cm deep.
  2. Mix the soil with 20% organic compost, such as worm castings or horse manure.
  3. Plant the plants at the proper distance.
  4. And finally, give them a good watering.
