Succulents, that is, cacti, crass and the plants with caudex, are some types of vegetal beings that live mainly in the rather dry zones of the planet. By having to adapt to such extreme conditions, they have developed wonderful shapes and colors, which is why many of us enjoy collecting them.

But what do we have to do if we want to expand our collection and we don't want to spend a lot of money? Sowing its seeds, of course. I will explain to you below how to plant succulents.

When are they sown?

All the succulents They are plants that generally flower in spring or fall. This means that your seeds will be ready to be sown in summer, late winter, or next spring. To have a greater guarantee of success, and taking into account that we cannot reproduce the conditions of their habitat unless we are in Mexico, Chile, Peru or the African continent, which are the places where we find the vast majority of species, we have to find an ideal time to plant them. Said moment will be in spring or summer. Because?

In those two seasons the minimum temperature stays above 15 degrees Celsius, which is perfect for future succulents.

What do I need to plant them?

Not much. Just this:

  • Hotbed: it can be a flowerpot, a cork tray, a milk container, a glass of yogurt, ... Regardless of what we use, it must have holes in the base for water drainage.
  • Substratum: we can mix black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts, use vermiculite alone or mixed with 40% black peat, or mix washed river sand with 50% black peat.
  • Sprayer: the seeds of succulents are very small, so it is advisable to water with a sprayer.
  • Label: to put the scientific name of the species and the sowing date.

How to plant the succulents?

Now that we have it all we are going to proceed to plant them following this step by step:

  1. The first thing we have to do is fill the seedbed with the substrate we have chosen.
  2. Afterwards, we spray well so that it is moistened (but not flooded).
  3. Then, we spread the seeds on the surface, trying to get them to be a little separated from each other.
  4. Then we cover them with a thin layer of substrate and spray again.
  5. Finally, we introduce the label and place the seedbed in a very bright place but without direct sun.
