How to plant tomatoes

Tomato garden

Tomatoes are horticultural plants that, due to their rapid growth and high production, are one of the most widely cultivated both in the garden and in the flowerbed. They hardly require space to grow and develop, which is very interesting whether we have a small plot of land or if we have a patio or balcony.

They are also one of the simplest vegetables to grow. So if you would like to start taking care of the green and get it to bear fruit in spring, we are going to explain how to plant tomatoes.

How to plant potted tomatoes?

Tomato

Tomatoes, in order to grow well and give an interesting amount of fruit, must be in pots of about 40cm in diameter.. But of course, we cannot transfer the newly germinated or purchased seedlings to such large pots, since otherwise the delicate rootlets would rot in less than we imagine. So, what to do?

To avoid problems, we have to do the following:

  1. When we are going to remove them from the seedbed, what we will do is prepare a pot for each one that measures 20cm in diameter, filling it practically completely.
  2. Then, we will make a small hole in the center with both fingers or with a stick.
  3. Next, we will take the seedlings and plant them in the container, making sure they are not too far below the edge.
  4. Finally, we will water.

After two months, we will repeat these steps, but this time we will transfer them to a 35-40cm pot and we will place a tutor for them so that they can develop correctly.

And in the orchard?

Tutors for tomato plants

We will need some tutors like these so that the tomato plants can grow well.

If we intend to plant a series of tomato plants in the orchard, what we must do is the following:

  1. The first thing is to prepare the ground, removing the stones as well as the wild herbs. In addition, it will also be necessary to pay it with organic fertilizers, such as manure o earthworm humus.
  2. Then, we will proceed to place the tutors, as seen in the image above, leaving a distance of about 40cm between them. In this way, as the seedlings grow, we can hold them to them, preventing the stems from breaking.
  3. Next, we will install the drip irrigation system if we do not have it installed.
  4. Now, we will plant the seedlings so that they are separated from each other by about 35-40cm.
  5. Finally, we will water.

Tomatoes

Thus, we can obtain a good harvest 😉.

Thanks Monica, I'll try it with a pot and I'll tell you what happens. I will start from scratch with dried seed here at home.

LAST YEAR I PLANTED IN 100L CAPACITY POTS. THE TOMATOES WERE WELL IN SIZE AND QUANTITY. I HAD THE PROBLEM WITH THE APICAL ROT (PESETA EVIL).
IT SEEMS TO BE DUE TO A LACK OF CALCIUM THAT MAKES THE SKIN WEAKEN AND ROT IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TOMATO.
HOW SHOULD I PREVENT THE PROBLEM? ADDING CALCIUM TO THE SUBSTRATE OR WHEN WATERING DO I ADD LIQUID CALCIUM.?

      Hello Santiago.
To prevent rot, you must do several things:
-Avoid wetting the leaves and fruits.
-Improve the drainage of the substrate in the event that the water does not drain well. To do this, you can mix the earth with 30% perlite, clay balls or river sand.
-Sprinkle the earth with sulfur or copper during the spring. This will prevent the growth of fungi.
-And last and not least, fertilizing the plant throughout the season, using liquid organic fertilizers (those that come in powder would not allow the water to drain well). Guano and seaweed extract are highly recommended, but the latter should not be abused, as it is very alkaline.
All in all, you shouldn't have any more problems. But if you're still concerned, you can add chopped eggshells to the substrate. As they decompose, they will contribute calcium to the plant.
If you have doubts, don't hesitate to ask.
      A greeting.
