How to prune a vine

Parthenocissus quinquefolia

The vine is a climbing shrub ideal for all types of gardensregardless of the weather (except if it's too cold). It is also one of the easiest to care for and one of the best resistant to drought. So much so that it is cultivated even in the Mediterranean, where rainfall is not very abundant.

However, so that each year it has a greater quantity of fruits, it is necessary to trim its branches towards the end of winter, when the risk of frost has passed and before it resumes its growth. So grab your pruning shears that today we will learn how to prune a vine.

Virgin vine

Those who have a vine should know that it is convenient to prune it every year, but not all of it. Let me explain: if you remove or trim all the stems, you will not get the expected harvest because next year's fruit will sprout from this year's woody branches. So that, it is very important that weak or diseased branches are removed so that the plant can concentrate its energy only on healthy ones, which will be the ones that will bear fruit in the short or medium term. Leave about 30 buds on the plants that are grown for their grapes, or 50 if you also want to use it to make wine.

Once the grapes have already formed, any new growth must be pruned so as not to overload the vine. In this way, in addition, the appearance of mold is prevented.

Prune vine

The vines are very fast growing plants so you can let them grow to cover a wall or lattice to which you want to give life, and keep them pruned every season so that they look beautiful and you can, thus, obtain an excellent harvest of grapes.

And, by the way, they are so resistant that you will not need to put healing paste on each cut 🙂, but yes, disinfect the pruning shears with pharmacy alcohol before and after use to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
