The Baobab is one of those trees that attracts a lot of attention: its practically straight trunk, its size and elegance make it a very interesting plant that many want to grow in their homes or gardens. But it is not easy to get copies, since requires a warm frost-free climate to grow, and its growth rate is slow.
Still, seeing it germinate is a very beautiful experience, so I'm going to explain it to you how to reproduce Baobab.
The first thing you are going to need are, of course, the seeds. You won't find them anywhere, unless you live in a climate where baobab trees can be planted in gardens of course, but you can find them in online stores. The ideal time to acquire them is in spring Summer, when temperatures remain above 20ºC. In autumn or winter I do not advise sowing them, unless you have a heated greenhouse.
Once you have them, you have to scarify them a bit with sandpaper, being careful not to puncture them. Then, you put them in a glass with hot water (without burning), for 24 hours. After that time, it will be time to sow them in full sun in a pot with porous substrate (you can use one prepared for cacti, or mix black peat with perlite in equal parts), burying them no more than 1cm.
If everything goes fine, in 15 days you will see that they begin to germinate your first baobabs. But now you have to continue taking care of them. In fact, now is when the complicated part comes: you have to do a fungicide treatment to prevent fungi, and control the risks, since they do not tolerate waterlogging. Thus, in spring and summer they will be watered once a week, while in autumn and winter once every 20-25 days will suffice.
Good luck.
Good evening, I have planted some baobab seeds, only with 2 I have been successful but I have doubts because in one their growth is very fast and in the other slower, the leaves are different, can I send you photos so that you can see them and me East? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge on the subject, I send you greetings from Mexico La Gran Tenochtitlan.
