How to start a cactus collection?

Cactus collection

Cacti are plants succulents that have the ability to amaze us all. They produce such beautiful flowers that, although they do not last long, they are some of the most beautiful in the Plant Kingdom. And if we add to that that they are relatively easy to care for, it is easy that we want to have some in our garden or patio.

But first of all, it is important to know how to start a cactus collection. So we can know what exactly we need so that our future plants are beautiful.

To have healthy cacti it is necessary to keep in mind a series of things that I am going to tell you below. If they are put in the wrong place, or if they are not given the necessary care, they will soon weaken and die. To avoid this, you need to know the following:

  • Location: it has to give them the sun directly. If you buy them in a nursery where they were protected from the sun, you should gradually accustom them to direct sunlight, starting in spring or autumn.
  • Substratum: it must have very good drainage. You can just use pumice, or mix equal parts black peat with pearlite.
  • Flower pot: the clay ones allow the roots to "grip" better, but if you intend to have a large collection, the plastic ones will be better for you.
  • Subscriber: in spring and summer with fertilizer for cacti, or with Nitrofoska Azul, following the instructions specified on the package.
  • Transplant: in spring, every two years.
  • Irrigation: you should water two to three times a week in summer, and once every 7-10 days the rest of the year.
  • Rusticity: most of them withstand mild frosts down to -2ºC, but they need protection against hail.

What do I need to start the collection?

If you intend to have a nice collection, in addition to what has been said so far, you will need labels to name the cacti, but above all desire and enthusiasm to learn. Among those addicted to these plants we usually say that, when you start buying them, you can't stop because there are so many and they are all so beautiful, that there is always one that surprises you.

Fortunately, nowadays it is easy to expand knowledge thanks to social networks like Facebook, where there are a wide variety of groups where people, in addition to learning, upload the images of their beauties and make friends, which is always interesting 🙂.
