How to take care of the Bird of Paradise

Bird from paradise

The Bird of Paradise is a plant that draws a lot of attention for its curious flowers of very bright and cheerful colors. It is often planted in gardens with a warm climate without severe frosts, and it is also very popular in bright interiors. And is that not a demanding plant, even though it may seem otherwise. In fact, regardless of the experience you have taking care of the green, with our protagonist you will not have any problem 😉.

Even so, so that you have a healthy plant with which to show off, we are going to tell you how to take care of the Bird of Paradise.

The Bird of Paradise is a plant native to South Africa. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with large, grayish-green leaves, which have a very marked and visible central vein. It reaches a maximum height of 1,5 meters, but having a rather slow growth rate, especially when young, and a non-invasive root system, can be planted both in pot and in the garden. The question is, where exactly to put it?

It can be in full sun, but also in semi-shade. Vegeta well in all soils, even limestone. But ... (there is always a but), it is very important that we bear in mind that does not support intense frosts, only those light and of short duration up to -3ºC.

If we talk about irrigation, this it will have to be frequent, yes, avoiding waterlogging. The ideal would be to water it about 3 times a week in summer, and between once or twice a week the rest of the year. You can take advantage during the warm months to fertilize it with any mineral or organic fertilizer, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

As for pests and diseases, it must be said that it is very resistant, but it can be affected by mealybugs which you can remove by hand or by doing treatments with paraffin oil.

Enjoy your Bird of Paradise.

Hello, excellent post just what I'm researching hehe.

They gave me seeds of that and of canna indica, how can I take care of them from seeds?

    Thank you :)

      Hi Carlos 🙂
Both those of the Bird of Paradise and those of Canna can be sown directly in a pot, outside, with a lot of light.
You can use black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts, and you just have to always keep it slightly damp.
In a maximum of a month they will begin to germinate.
The following spring you can transfer them to individual pots.
      A greeting.
