Potted basil plant

Basil is one of the most beloved and easy-to-care plants that we find in homes. They adapt very well to living both indoors and outdoors, and as they are rather small they can always be grown in pots.

But How to water basil? If you just got one and you have doubts about its watering, follow our advice so that it can grow as well as it has done so far.

When do you need to water the basil?

Basil is a fast-growing herbaceous plant that reaches a height of at most 40 centimeters. As it has very thin stems and a superficial root system, it is one of those plants that you want to buy to have on the balcony, or in the kitchen window, since its leaves are also used a lot to prepare many recipes, such as salads. . Therefore, it is very important to know when to water it, because without water it would quickly dry out.

Well then. The frequency of watering will vary from season to season, but to get it right, we recommend guiding ourselves by the humidity of the substrate. If we insert a thin wooden stick to the bottom and when we extract it we see that a lot of soil has adhered to it, we will know that it is still very wet and that, therefore, we do not have to water. Another thing we can do is take the pot once watered and again after a few days: this difference in weight can serve as a guide to know when to water.

How to water it?

We can water it in two different ways: from above, that is, watering the substrate directing the water to its surface, or By immersion, placing a plate under it. With the latter you have to be careful, because if the roots are in contact with the water for a long time they will rot and our basil will spoil. To avoid this, you have to remove the excess water within ten minutes of having watered it, so we will not have to worry about anything.
