How to water your plants on vacation

Whether it's summer, winter, spring or fall, being away from home can make you wonder how to take care of your plants at that time. The normal thing is to look for "a substitute", that is, a person who comes to your house every few days and who is in charge of watering them. But it is becoming less common, because we are more independent.

Fortunately, there are many ways to protect plants and get them to hold fairly well for two, three, or even four weeks. But how? We give you several options so that you can choose the one that best suits your plants.

Self-watering pots

Before you think that this is the best solution, take into account what time you are in, since it may not be the ideal time to transplant plants. If it is, it may be an option, since these pots have a water tank that delivers a certain amount through capillarity. The only thing you have to control is the time it takes for the tank to empty.

This way, you will know if you can leave the plant without problems for 2-3-4 weeks. Depending on the temperature, the container, and the plant itself, you will be able to tell.

Gelled water

Another option you have to water your plants on vacation is through gelled water. Do you wonder what is that? Well, it is a water that is sold in the form of a gel that is placed on top of the earth. You can even put it inside her.

Usually it is sold in a bottle format and all you have to do is stick it in the ground (with the mouthpiece down). Being in contact with the earth, it will be in charge of distributing the product as the plant needs it.

Normally it lasts two weeks but it is better to place two per pot (even if you go less time) to make sure that they will not lack water (especially if there is little humidity or they require more water than normal).

Cotton laces

Watering the plants on vacation with cotton cords is a fairly easy way and if you use a large container, you can end up leaving the plants "saved" for a month (depending on the number of plants that depend on it).

The system is quite simple. You have to get a container, carafe or large bottle of water. We recommend that you use the 8-liter bottles of bottled water and that you apply one bottle for every four plants (six if they are small).

Now, you have to get cotton ropes. You must put one end into the soil of each pot and the other end will go into the water bottle. Make sure it goes all the way to the bottom, so it won't come out.

It would be advisable for the water bottle to be higher than the pots, so that the law of gravity acts on the cords and the water.

What will happen is that the bead will soak up and keep the substrate moist, not soaked so that the plant has the watering covered during the time that you are not there.

A variant of this is, instead of using laces, to do it with cotton strips, for example from T-shirts that you no longer wear and that you cut into strips to be able to use them for watering. That gives you the opportunity to put several strips per pots depending on how big they are or what needs they have.

Towels and to the bathroom

This is an old-fashioned remedy that worked like a charm, so you don't lose anything by trying. The first thing you should do is know how many plants you have and group them based on their needs (more water, less water).

Those that need more water should place them together, since this way the plants will be able to create a microclimate, and moisture will stay between them. How to get it?

Take them to the bathroom. Take some towels that do not work for you and throw them on a container, a large tray or the same base of the bathtub or shower. Soak them very well with water, then put the plants on top. This will create an environment of humidity (that if you close the door of the bathtub or shower it will stay longer) and they will manage to hold a lot.

It would be convenient, if possible, that that bathroom had natural light, so that something could be filtered inside.

In the case of plants that need little water, such as succulents, cactus ..., you can leave them in a place where they are not given direct sun and watered, they are a small plate with water and using one of the previous methods. They could also be in the bathroom, since although they do not need so much humidity, they can be nourished by that environment.

Drip cone

In this case, this option can be very effective if you don't have many plants and they don't require a lot of water. Cones are usually sold for a liter and a half, although there are smaller ones, but those do not interest you.

What it is about is stick those cones in the potting soil (at least one per pot, two or three if they are large) and the water will be dosed until it is possible to water the plant on vacation without you being there.

Depriving yourself a vacation for having plants is not an option. These cannot limit us, so knowing how to water the plants on vacation is important so that, when you return, you continue to take care of your little suckers and that they give you beautiful images of their leaves, branches and flowers in case they have them.
