It is one of those palm trees that can be planted in gardens located in areas where the wind blows especially strong from time to time, such as those produced by hurricanes, which is why it is known as the Hurricane Palm.

A very interesting plant, which has a very, very high ornamental value, capable of beautifying any corner and that, although it can reach 12 meters, its trunk only thickens 15cm, so that can be grown in large pots no problem.

Characteristics of the Hurricane Palm

Our protagonist, whose scientific name is Dictyosperma album, is a plant belonging to the botanical family Arecaceae (formerly Palmaceae) native to the Mascarene Islands that has beautiful, pinnate, green leaves with a length of 2 meters. Its capital, that is, what joins the trunk with the leaves, can be up to 1m long, is covered by white wax, and is slightly swollen at the base. Its trunk is ringed, very thin, about 15cm thick.

The inflorescences are composed of white to yellow, hermaphroditic flowers. The fruit is purple or black when ripe, and is ovoid in shape. The seed is brown, 1,5cm long.

How do you take care of yourself?

It is a plant that, due to its origin, does not withstand the cold, so its cultivation outdoors is only recommended if the temperature does not drop below 0ºC in the place where you live. If that's your case, take note of our tips so you can show off your palm tree 🙂:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Irrigation: frequent, especially in the warmer months. Water 2 to 3 times a week in summer, and 1 to 2 a week the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: it is important to fertilize with a specific fertilizer for palm trees for sale in nurseries, or to use liquid organic fertilizers such as guano.
  • TransplantWhether you want to plant in the garden or move to a larger pot, which must be done every two years, you have to wait for spring.
  • Soil or substrate: it must be rich in organic matter and have good drainage.
  • Pruning: remove only dry leaves.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring-summer. It is recommended to sow them in a sealed plastic bag filled with vermiculite moistened with water, and place it near a heat source (about 25-30ºC).
