What is the care of hydrangeas?

Blue hydrangea flowers

Hydrangeas are shrubs whose inflorescences are so showy that it is easy to take one home with us. But to have them very beautiful it is necessary to know the needs they have, since otherwise it is most likely that they will not last long.

Therefore, in Jardinería On we are going to tell you what is the care of hydrangeas. So you can buy it knowing that you can do everything you need to live for years and years.

Hydrangeas are acidophilic plants. What does this mean? That to grow well they have to be planted in a soil (or substrate) whose pH is acidic, between 4 and 6. Therefore, whether we want to plant them in the garden or in a pot, it is very important first to know the pH of the soil, as we explained in this article and in this other.

In the case that we have an alkaline soil, we can make a 50cm x 50cm hole, put shading mesh or anti-rhizome mesh on the sides, and fill it with substrate for acidophilic plants; If, on the other hand, we want to have it in a pot, we will use a substrate for acidophilic plants or kanuma.

If we talk about irrigation, it has to be equally with soft water. The best is the rain, but if it cannot be obtained, it can be watered with acidified water (diluting half a lemon in a liter of water). The frequency will vary depending on the season of the year: in summer it will be watered three or four times a week, but the rest of the year you have to water less, once or twice a week.

So that it grows well, it is highly advisable to put it outside, in semi-shade and pay it in spring and summer with a fertilizer for acidophilic plants that we will find in nurseries and garden stores. We must follow the instructions specified on the package to avoid overdose.

Lastly, we will have to cut off the withered flowers and those diseased, weak or broken branches so that it continues to look pretty.
