Indoor plants that last longer without watering

There are plants that can live with little water

Would you like to have a home full of plants that you would only have to water occasionally? Well, that is what I proposed to myself. I confess that I was not very much in favor of having pots at home, since any plant grows better outdoors - as long as the climate allows it - than between four walls for the simple fact that there is none that is "indoor". But on the other hand, he did not want to miss the opportunity to green the house.

Now, he was looking for varieties that were resistant, which he did not have to water every few days. Water is a scarce resource, so If you want to know which indoor plants last the longest without watering, these are the ones that I personally recommend.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a fast growing succulent

El Aloe vera it is a non-cactaceous, or crass, succulent plant that has lanceolate and fleshy leaves, light green in color. Sometimes, especially if it is young, it also has white dots. The height it reaches when it finishes growing is about 40 centimeters, and in spring-summer it produces flowers in yellow spikes.

Needs very, very little care. In fact, as long as it's in a room with lots of light, and you water it occasionally, letting the soil dry out before watering it again, you're sure to enjoy it for years to come.

Chlorophytum comosum (Headband)

La tape or spider plant it is a perennial herbaceous plant that has elongated and thin green leaves, or with a white line in the center. It tends to develop many stolons, that is, stems from whose end shoots sprout, which is why it can be kept in a hanging pot for example. Also, it has white flowers in spring.

The most interesting thing is that needs little to live: a room with (natural) light, a pot, a soil that drains water well, and one or two waterings per week.

Dracaena fragrans (Brazil stick)

La Dracaena fragrans is an evergreen shrub that It can grow to 6 meters high, and produce elongated leaves up to 1 meter long. It is a plant widely used to decorate offices, offices and places like that, but it is also ideal to have in a home as long as it is in a room where there is a lot of light.

Although another of the common names it receives is Palo de Agua, should not be grown in an aquatic environment since it does not resist excess water or have flooded roots. What's more, if you grow it in a pot with holes in its base with universal substrate, and you water it a maximum of twice a week during the summer and less in winter, you will see how well it grows.

aureum (pothos)

El pothos it is a classic indoors. It is a climber that can reach 20 meters as long as it has support, and has beautiful green or variegated heart-shaped leaves (green and yellow). It is one of the most grateful, since if you put it in a room where there is a lot of light and you water it once a week it will be fine.

We at home have two types of variegated, one that is greener, and another in which the yellow color is more present. Both need the same care.

Howea forsteriana (Kentya)

La Kentia it is one of the palm trees that is most enjoyed indoors. Although we are talking about a plant that can measure 15 meters in height, it is a plant that grows very slowly. It can take several months for the seed to germinate, and once it does it takes years for the plant to form a true trunk. But this is something that we can take advantage of, since inside the house it looks beautiful.

In addition, needs few risks. To give you an idea, we only water it once a week, a maximum of two, in summer. The rest of the year, as the earth takes longer to dry, we do it less frequently.

philodendron red »Imperial» (Philodendron)

The imperial Philodendron is a climber

Exemplary from my collection, well accompanied by my cat Sasha.

The imperial Philodendron is a plant that I discovered while going to a bakery in town. They had the same one that I ended up buying (see image above), the philodendron red "Imperial Network". Red in English it means red, which can be confusing because the leaves are rather brown. These are very large: they can measure 35 centimeters long. The plant that produces them is an evergreen climber that reaches 6 meters in heightbut it takes its time. You should know that there is a variety of green leaf.

It needs a lot of light indoors, but you only have to water it once a week, at most two, and not always. That is, in summer you do have to be more aware of watering, but the rest of the year you do not have to pour water so often.

Sansevieria trifasciata »Golden Hahnii»

Sanseviera wants little water

Copy of my collection.

La Sansevieria trifasciata »Golden Hahnii» differs from other types of sansevieria by having variegated leaves, very yellow on the upper side and greener on the underside. Its height once adult is about 50 centimeters, and it produces several suckers throughout its life, so it is a plant that I recommend growing in wide and low pots.

These plants are popularly known by the names of tiger's tongue or sword of saint george. But regardless of this, we are talking about some that resist drought very well, which is why it could not be missing from this list. In fact, you only have to water them when the soil is very dry.
