Jasmine at Night, when the flowers worship the moon

Night jasmine

While most plants have evolved to flower during the day, there are others who prefer to do it at night, as is the case with our protagonist. This is a shrub with small white flowers, very simple but at the same time very beautiful, that it will give us great satisfactions.

Let's learn to take care of the Jasmine by Night.

Features

Chester nighttime

Jasmine at night, whose scientific name is Chester nighttime, is an evergreen shrub capable of reaching five meters in height. It belongs to the Solanaceae family, and is originally from Latin America. Its flowers, which give off a pleasant aroma, sprout in summer. And, once they have been pollinated, the fruit begins to grow, in the form of a berry, inside which are the seeds.

In gardening it is used as a potted plant, or as a garden shrub. It is usual that it is planted near the main entrance, in order to enjoy the perfume of its flowers just get home. It can also be used as bonsai, as it tolerates pruning very well, which has to be done in autumn.

Farming

Cestrum nocturnum flowers

Night Jasmine is a plant that does not require much maintenance, nor does it require previous experience in plant care. The only thing to keep in mind is that it must be placed in an exhibition where it receives direct sunlight. It is sensitive to frost, but it will withstand weak frosts (up to -3ºC) without problems. Anyway, if you live in a climate with cold winters, during those months you can have it indoors decorating your home, in a very bright room.

We will water it three times a week in summer and 1-2 the rest of the year, depending on the weather conditions in our area. During the summer I recommend that you spray it with Neem Oil; This way you will prevent pests from affecting it.

What did you think of the Night Jasmine? Do you have in your garden?

Carmen: I have two small palm trees on my terrace, they have a mold that spoils them.
How can I remove this disease.
    Thank you.
    Fernando.

      Hello Fernando.
You probably have botrytis. You can treat them with fungicides, such as Fosetil-Al, and water them a little less.
      A greeting.

    Hello Monica,
I have a night jasmine in my garden and I do not know what plague is attacking it, almost all the leaves are eaten, it begins on the surface of the leaves, small areas that begin to dry, spreading throughout the leaf until it disappears, I saw below on one of the leaves some small white dots like with a very fine cotton, how can I combat this problem.
    Thank you
    Xavier

      Hi Xavier.
Without seeing the photo I don't know how to tell you puedes (you can send it to our Facebook), but you can treat it with potassium soap, which will "drown" those insects without doing any harm to the plant.
      A greeting.

Hello. In the house next to mine, there are two huge jasmine plants at night. lately I have noticed that one of them is full of flies who remain attached to its leaves in an alarming amount. I would like to know why the flies have stayed in it and how to make them leave, since the house is unoccupied and no one is taking responsibility for this beautiful plant.

      Hello Sandra.

We recommend you read this article, in which we explain how to repel flies. We hope it helps you.

    Hello,

3 days ago I bought the cestrum nocturnum jasmine, on its 2nd day the leaves have wrinkled and some have turned yellow: (… why is it? What can I do to restore it? How long does it take for the flower caps and the flower ?
I have it on the terrace where it gets more direct sun than shade and where I live, the climate is tropical: humid and warm in summer and temperate in winter.
If my cat sucks on it or eats a leaf, could the poisoning be fatal?
    Please help,
    Thank you so much

      Hello Paula.

I recommend putting it in an area protected from the sun, since that is surely what is burning the plant.

How often do you water it? It is important that the soil is allowed to dry a little before watering again, so that it does not rot.

It is toxic to cats, yes. You better stay away from her.

      Greetings.
