El Jasminum fruticans It is a beautiful climbing plant that, due to its low height, can be grown in a pot or in a small garden without having to worry about anything.

Its flowers are of a very striking yellow color, which will undoubtedly make the place look very, very beautiful 🙂. Know all the care you need.

Origin and characteristics

The leaves of Jasminum fruticans are trifoliate

Our protagonist is an evergreen climber native to the Mediterranean, where it grows in the understory of holm oaks, cork oaks and gall oaks. Its scientific name is Jasminum fruticans, although it is known as wild jasmine, Spanish jasmine, mountain jasmine, yellow jasmine, jasminorro, celestina, or somedio. Grows to a height of 1 to 2 meters, and develops green and striated stems from which sprout tri-foliate leaves (three leaflets) of green color.

The flowers, which bloom towards the end of spring and in summer, are yellow. Once pollinated, the fruit begins to ripen, which will end up being small, black and oval in shape.

What are their cares?

Being rather small, it is a plant that looks great anywhere, so if you would like to enjoy its beauty, we recommend providing the following care:

Location

Yellow jasmine can be grown in both full sun and semi-shade; that will have a better development if you give it a minimum of four hours of direct light a day.

Earth

Jasminum fruticans is a small climber

It grows in soils rich in nutrients and with good water filtration capacity. Therefore, the following is advised:

  • Flower pot: we will first put a layer of arlite (you can get it here) or volcanic clay (buy it at this link), and then universal growing substrate (such as this) mixed with 20% perlite.
  • Garden: if the land has the characteristics mentioned before, great; otherwise we will make a planting hole of about 50cm x 50cm, we will cover it with shading mesh and we will fill it with the mixture of substrates mentioned before.

Irrigation

The frequency of watering wild jasmine will depend a lot on the climate and where you have it. From the outset, you have to know that during the summer you will have to water much more often than the rest of the year, since the land dries easily. But ... how often?

  • Flower pot: when it is grown in a pot, one must be especially attentive to watering, otherwise the roots will dry out or rot quickly. So in general we will water 3-4 times (it can even be 5 in very hot and dry climates) in summer, and every 3-4 days the rest.
  • Garden: as the soil dries more slowly, it is advisable to water 3 or 4 times a week maximum during the summer, and once or twice a week the rest of the year.

In case of doubt, we will check the humidity of the soil or substrate either with a digital humidity meter or by inserting a thin wooden stick.

Subscriber

El Jasminum fruticans is a plant that is growing through much of spring and into late summer / early fall, so that you do not have to lack »food» (that is, fertilizer 🙂) in all those months. But beware: there are many types of Fertilizers and not all are equally effective.

Although there are chemical fertilizers, because they can damage the environment it is advisable to use organic. And of these, from experience I can tell you that the guano (on sale here powder and here liquid) such as chicken manure are very, very good, as they are rich in nutrients and their effectiveness is quite fast. Of course: you do not have to use them fresh, but you have to let them dry in the sun for about ten days or buy them ready to use.

It is important to pay once a month, or in the case of using liquids, follow the instructions specified on the container to the letter.

Multiplication

It multiplies by seeds in spring and cuttings in late summer. Let's see how to proceed in each case:

Seeds

  1. First, a seedling tray has to be filled with universal growing medium, and watered thoroughly.
  2. Then, a maximum of two seeds are sown in each socket.
  3. They are then covered with a thin layer of substrate, and watered again with a sprayer.
  4. Finally, the tray is placed outside, in semi-shade.

They will germinate in 2-3 weeks.

Cuttings

It is very simple: a branch of semi-hard wood with leaves is cut, the base is impregnated with homemade rooting agents and is potted with vermiculite. It will emit its own roots in 3-4 weeks.

Rusticity

El Jasminum fruticans resists cold and frost down to -7ºC. If you live in an area where it is colder, don't worry: keep it indoors in a bright, draft-free room until spring returns.
