It has very decorative leaves and flowers and, in addition, it can be reproduced very easily by cuttings obtained in spring or summer. To have one or more healthy Kalanchoe, you just have to take into account the following:
- Location: Most species grow best in direct sunlight, but there is one, Kalanchoe blosffeldiana, that prefers to be in semi-shade.
- Irrigation: it is advisable to water very little, once a week, in summer twice if it is very hot. In winter every 15-20 days.
- Subscriber: recommended to pay in spring and summer with liquid organic fertilizers such as guano, or minerals.
- Substratum: it must have good drainage. Black peat mixed with pearlite can be used, but if you can get pumice or river sand, something better will grow. You can mix it with black peat, or use it as a sole substrate (advisable if you live in an area where it rains frequently).
- Pruning: no need to prune.
- Reproduction: by cuttings during the warm months. Cut one or more stems with pruning shears previously disinfected with alcohol, and then plant them in pots with porous substrate. After watering, put them in an area where they don't get direct sun, and you'll see how they don't take more than a couple of weeks to root.
- Plagues and diseases: What usually affects it the most are the cottony mealybugs, which can be removed with a swab from the ears moistened in pharmacy alcohol.
- Rusticity: supports mild frosts, as long as they are of short duration, down to -2ºC.
