Tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum)

Sapium sebiferum

Today's protagonist is a tree that is very difficult to find far from its place of origin: Japan. But nevertheless it can be a great option if you want to have a tree that gives way to autumn but you live in a slightly warm climate. It is about the commonly called Tallow tree, whose scientific name is Sapium sebiferum or also triadic sebifera. It is a deciduous leaf that, in late summer, turns a spectacular red color.

In addition, it is rustic and adaptable. Would you like to know more details about this species?

Sapium flowers

The leaves are simple, oval, green in color. It can grow to a height of approximately eight meters, with a good glass ideal for shade. Its growth is fast and, as we said, it adapts well to all types of soils, as long as it has direct light to grow. In several states of North America it is considered a pest, but it is still sold in many other areas as an ornamental tree.

It is, perhaps, one of the few trees that they can fall reasonably well in somewhat warm climates like the Mediterranean. That is why, if you want to have a tree that gives way to autumn, the Tallow Tree is a good option for this type of climatic conditions.

Sapium in autumn

In gardening it is used as a tree to provide shade mainly, but in Japan the wax from the seeds is used as a replacement for vegetable oil to cook. Also with this same wax they make candles or soap. The leaves have medicinal properties, and thanks to this they are used to treat infections that can develop in the hair follicles of the skin.

So now you know, if you are looking for a resistant tree and also ornamental, try a Tallow Tree. Surely you will not be disappointed.

The bait tree is also called chainis?
I would also like to know if it can be put on sidewalks or raises the floor.

      Hi Juany.

Well, the truth is that I could not tell you if it is also known as chainis. I do not know.
It cannot be placed near irrigation benches, it is better to plant it about 5 meters from them. But it is difficult to lift the ground.

      Regards!

I have this tree and it has a plague, it is turning white in parts and it throws like a breeze something that stains the street and the car has already been fumigated but there are no changes, what do you recommend?

      hi babe
What exactly do you have? Is that from what you say, they could be mealybugs (which are like cotton balls, which break easily), or fungi. The former are eliminated with an anti-cochineal insecticide, while for fungi it is necessary to use a systemic fungicide.
      A greeting.

I have one of these trees in Monterrey, the other trees of the same species have already turned their leaves red, but not mine, does anyone know why?

      Hello Jose.
When a tree turns red in autumn, it is because there is little nitrogen in that soil. Therefore, it may be that the soil where your plant grows has a little more nitrogen than the others.
Or it may also be that yours still does not feel the need to shed its leaves, either because it is a little more protected or because it has been watered or fertilized lately.
      A greeting.
