Barrel (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum)

Barrel plant

The plant known as barilla, whose scientific name is Mesembryanthemum crystallinumIt is a small, not very tall, non-cactus succulent that could almost pass for being a common herb if it weren't for the reddish color of its flower buds.

Origin and characteristics

Barrel leaves and flowers

Our protagonist is a non-cactus succulent plant native to Africa, Western Asia and Europe, found mainly in the Canary Islands. Its scientific name is Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, although it is popularly known as a barbell. It develops wide and very papilous leaves, green in color. These, as summer approaches, reduce their size and acquire a purple color. The flowers are white or slightly pink, and are 3cm in diameter.

The plant does not exceed 5-6cm in height, so it is highly recommended to have it in a well visible place, either as a solitary potted plant, or planted with other species in a planter.
