If you have a patio or a small piece of land you can do two things: turn it into a jungle species or opt for a garden with a minimalist design, which is, by the way, very fashionable in recent times. And it is that, the same objective can be achieved both in a place full of plants and in another in which the human use of space matters more.

Do you like the idea? So, take a look at these images as you discover what a minimalist garden should have.

What are minimalist gardens?

Zen garden, a type of minimalist garden

Minimalist gardens are a type of garden in which clean and simple lines as well as pure forms are emphasized. Furniture with straight edges, ceramic or wooden floors, and abstract metal sculptures are very common. You can also incorporate a sheet of water or a small pond, and even a pool.

To "trick" the view of the visitor you can place several mirrors in strategic areas in order to make your garden look more spacious. Although you should know that for this you can also build planters and place some plants, whether aromatic or shrubs.

What use do they have?

The minimalist gardens they are very useful when looking for peace of mind. Being surrounded by urbanity (traffic, stress, etc.) it is a joy to be able to get home and lie down on the sofa in your garden to read a good book or enjoy the landscape with the background sound of the birds that visit you or of the fountain. And that is not to mention that it is the perfect excuse to have a magnificent meeting with family or friends.

In addition, they are interesting when the available space is limited. In fact, if what you have is a small patio or terrace and you want to grow some plants placed in an elegant way, without a doubt designing a minimalist garden is a good option for you.

Some people think that this type of garden is too serious, boring; on the other hand, there are many other people who think just the opposite. The beauty, cleanliness and sobriety that characterize them are details that make you want to make better use of a space which would otherwise be of no use.

What plants to put in a minimalist garden?

If we take into account that minimalist gardens are usually small, and that what is also sought is that nothing stands out or stands out excessively, the plants that we have in it will obviously be of a reduced size. For example, these:

Trees

There may be some other tree, but you have to choose the one that measures as little as possible, and preferably, that is more of a large shrub or small tree than a tree itself:

  • Callistemon citrinus: it is an evergreen tree known as pipe cleaner that reaches a height of 2 to 10 meters. It produces red tube cleaner-like flowers in spring, and is resistant to -7ºC.
  • Cercis siliquastrum: known as the love treeIt is a deciduous tree that, although it can reach 15 meters, the most normal is that it does not exceed 6 meters. It blooms during spring, and resists frosts down to -12ºC.

Shrubbery

The bushes are one of the most important protagonists of the garden with a minimalist style, since they will be the ones in charge of delimiting the paths and areas. Because of this, it is recommended that they be evergreen, tolerate pruning well and do not have thorns, like these:

  • Photinia glabra: it is an evergreen shrub that reaches about 3-5 meters in height known as fotinia. In spring it produces a large number of flowers grouped in corymbs. Resists up to -12ºC.
  • Pitosporum tobira: it is an evergreen shrub known as orange blossom from China that, although it grows up to 7 meters, it can be had as a hedge of 1-2 meters. In spring it produces white flowers, and resists up to -10ºC.

Palms

Palm trees are like bushes: there is always room for some 😉. Although there are many with a thick trunk, there are others that hardly take up space despite the height they reach, like these:

  • Howea forsteriana: it is a palm tree known as Kentia with a slender trunk whose diameter is only 30 centimeters, with a slightly wider base (35 centimeters). It reaches a height of 10 meters, and has pinnate leaves 3-4 meters long. It resists frosts down to -7ºC, but needs protection against direct sun throughout its life.
  • Phoenix roubleni: known as dwarf palm or robelina palmIt is a species that reaches a height of 5 meters, but the normal thing is that it stays in 2-3 meters. Its leaves are pinnate, and are up to 140 centimeters long. It resists the sun well, although it lives well in semi-shade. Supports up to -4ºC.

Flowers

It is true that all herbaceous plants that produce ornamental flowers either have a size or can be pruned without problems, but the truth is that in a minimalist garden the introduction of this type of plants must be avoided. Be careful, that does not mean that they cannot be put on if they like, simply not putting them on is a recommendation.

Anyway, if you want to put some, do not hesitate and get for example:

  • Gazania freezes: it is a herbaceous plant that reaches about 30 centimeters in height, and that blooms in spring and summer. I want sun, and more or less frequent waterings. Resists cold and weak frosts.
  • Pelargonium: known as geranium, there are many varieties and sizes, not exceeding one meter in height. They bloom for a good part of the year and, although they do not resist frost, the cold does not harm them.
