Palm trees are not a demanding species, but it is advisable to fertilize during the growth period, that is, from spring to autumn as this way you will be able to have more nutrients in addition to those found in the soil. Specific fertilizers for this type of plants are commercialized in the market, which carry everything they need for their correct growth and development; But you can also opt for natural fertilizers such as manure or humus, which will be spread around the plant, mixing it a little with the most superficial layer of soil, taking care not to damage the roots.

Although they do not usually have serious problems, they do special attention must be paid to the pests of the red weevil and the Paysandisia. If you live in a locality where they are present, it is highly advisable as well as necessary that you do a preventive treatment in spring and summer, especially if they are adult palms.

The »minor inconveniences» that may bother them are the following:

  • Cochineal, both the cottony one and the one known as San José louse: Both are treated with an anticochineal product, or with Neem tree oil.
  • Aphids: they rarely appear, but if they do they are fought with an insecticide. They can also be prevented by putting one or two cloves of garlic into the soil.
  • Excess irrigation: it is perhaps what affects them the most, especially if they are indoors. It is manifested by having dry leaves, little or no growth, and in severe cases root rot with the consequent death of the plant. It can be avoided by using a substrate containing perlite or other draining material, and allowing said substrate to dry between waterings.
