What is the mulch fly?
The mulch fly, also known as the substrate fly, moisture fly or black fly, it is a winged dipteran measuring 2 to 4 mm, black or dark gray in color, with long legs and long, thin antennae. It causes serious damage, as it is capable of laying up to 200 eggs a week, which once they hatch after 2-3 days, begin to affect especially the roots, and specifically the root hairs, which are in charge to absorb nutrients from the soil.
By weakening plants, they expose them to attack by other pests and microorganisms, like fungi, bacteria, nematodes and / or viruses, so that unless we act quickly we could lose them.

- Yellow adhesive traps: the yellow color attracts flies, which stick as soon as they come into contact with the trap.
- Vermiculite: placed on the surface of the substrate, makes it difficult for females to lay eggs.
- Neem oil: you should start spraying on the leaves in a preventive way.
- Keep humidity low: avoid that the substrate is flooded. If possible, it is recommended to reduce the risks.
Chemical remedies
If the pest is widespread, it will be necessary to use chemical insecticides. One of the best is the Cypermethrin 10%, which we will find for sale in nurseries and garden stores. The instructions must be followed to the letter and put on rubber gloves to prevent the product from coming into contact with the skin.
