Norfolk pine, a spectacular conifer for your garden

Conifers are one of the most spectacular primitive plants that we can find, but if there is one with which you can have an exquisitely decorated garden, that is the one known by the name of Norfolk pine.

Its branches, which grow almost horizontally, form floors so that they look like a perfect pentagon. It is so elegant that it is difficult not to get hold of a copy as soon as it is found. Let's know more about this incredible plant.

Norfolk Pine Characteristics

Our protagonist, also known by the common names of Araucaria excelsa or Araucaria, and by the scientist Araucaria heterophylla, is an evergreen plant endemic to Norfolk Island, Australia. With an approximate height of 50 meters, it is a species whose leaves are shaped like scales. It is dioecious, which means that there are female and male specimens. The fruits are globose cones of about 12cm in diameter.

It is a very interesting plant to have in the gardens, either alone or in groups.

How do you take care of yourself?

If you want to have a copy, here is how to take care of it:

• Location: outdoors, in full sun or in semi-shade. It can be indoors, but the room should be very bright and without drafts.
• Soil or substrate: it must be fertile, with a neutral or slightly acidic pH, and have good drainage.
• Irrigation: in summer you will need two or three irrigations per week; the rest of the year one or two every XNUMX-XNUMX days will suffice.
• Subscriber: in spring and summer it must be paid with a liquid fertilizer every 15 days.
• Planting or transplanting time: in spring, when the risk of frost has passed.
• Multiplication: by seeds in spring. Direct sowing in seedbed. They will germinate after 2 months.
• Rusticity: it is a plant that supports frosts down to -4ºC.
