La Holm oak, whose scientific name is Quercus ilex, it is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region. It is also known as chaparro / ao carrasca, and it is one of the few Quercus (if not the only one) that tolerates drought and high summer temperatures somewhat well.

The leaf is leathery, dark green on the upper side and somewhat lighter on the underside., which is covered by a grayish fluff. They are provided with strong thorns that sprout from their contour when the tree is young, but as it grows the leaf that sprouts from the highest branches is born without them.

Thanks to these characteristics, the holm oak can avoid excessive loss of water, something that allows it to live in areas with great exposure to the sun.

  • External use: a part of bark is ground together with a part of leaves, and then the decoction is applied with compresses to the affected area.
