Peonies care

There are plants that are great allies when it comes to achieving a colorful garden because their flowers remain standing for a long time, giving us joy and beauty.

It is the case of peonies, a plant that is recommended to have in the garden in the case of having abundant amount of sun. Is that the peonies are noble and hardy but they need sun exposure to survive and develop in good conditions.

Peonies are perennials that can reach almost a meter in height and about 90 cm in width. They are very green and with abundant leaves thanks to the fact that their branches tend to lean when they bloom due to the weight of the flowers. For this reason, it is an ideal plant to be located on the sides of the garden or as a living fence.

Peonies are plants that, as we explained, they need full sun although if the climate is very warm then they can be located in a semi-shady place. However, outside of this reality there are differences according to the type of peony we are talking about, as there are herbaceous peonies and bush peonies. The first ones are those that lose their aerial part when winter arrives, while the shrubby ones resist all seasons and have large flowers that can be yellow, red or purple.

When it comes to planting peonies, it is possible to do it at any time as long as we talk about the growing season of the plant, anticipating autumn as the most ideal time to do it. So it's just a matter of planting them in rich, well-drained soil to avoid flooding. Remember to always place them in a sunny place because if the plants are in a semi-shady place, the flowering will not be so resounding. The floration occurs between May and July depending on the varieties as there are early, mid-season and late.

On the other hand, it is recommended don't plant peonies too deep as the roots must be close to the surface, no more than 5 cm deep. Remember to make a moderate watering as peonies do best with moist soil. In addition, it is recommended to apply an organic fertilizer and from time to time remove the withered flowers.

With these tips in mind, you can encourage yourself to plant peonies in your garden.
