It has a more or less rounded and compact crown when it is young, and as it grows it becomes wider and wider. Its needles (leaves) are evergreen, measuring 3 to 10 cm long. They are dark green in color and remain on the tree for two to three years.

It is a monoecious species. The male flowers are grouped in spikes of about 3cm, measure 1cm, have an oval shape and are yellowish in color. The female ones are less than 1cm long by 4-5mm wide, they are erect. They develop on a small peduncle, where they will end up becoming hanging. The fruit is a 4-5cm long pineapple that takes two years to mature. Sprockets have one wing and are small.

Resists cold and frost down to -17ºC, but not the extreme heat (30ºC or more).
