How to plant parsley in a pot step by step?

Parsley can be planted in a pot

Parsley is a very, very used herb in the kitchen. It grows quite fast, can live for several years, and the best thing is that its germination rate (that is, the percentage of seeds that germinate) is high. And precisely for this reason we are going to see how to get new plants at a really low cost.

And it is that the packets of seeds cost around one euro, and since they contain a lot (I never counted them, but depending on the brand there can be more than 20), it is easy to have a few plants. But, of course, for that you have to know how to plant parsley in a pot.

When is parsley planted?

It is important to know at what time of the year it is best to sow the seeds of the parsley to get them to grow as much as possible. And well, the most suitable time to sow them in during the spring, but since it's not a herb that needs to be exposed to sunlight, it really could be done at any time of the year. Of course, if it is winter, I recommend having the seedbed in a greenhouse or even at home, because if ice or snow falls, and there is a sprout growing, it will die.

But also, if it is going to be kept indoors, there must not be drafts in that room, or at least it does not have to be exposed to them, otherwise the seedlings would dry out.

Now that we know when to sow the seeds, it's time to get down to business. In order for planting to be done correctly, you will need to have the following:

  • Flower pot: of course, but not just any. It is very important that it be one that has holes at its base, otherwise the seeds would drown when the soil was wet for too long. Also, if you want to plant a lot, it is important that the container is wide.
  • Substrate or soil: Although parsley is a very resistant plant, when it comes to sowing seeds it is advisable to choose a good quality substrate, since it will depend, to a large extent, on whether they can grow well. For this reason, we will fill the pot with a specific substrate for seedlings, or with a universal one that we know in advance is good, such as No products found. or the Westland.
  • Watering can: it can be a small one, 1 liter, like the one they sell here. The water has to be warm; that is, neither very cold nor very hot, around 25-28ºC.
  • Seeds: parsley seeds can be bought from here for example.
  • label for plants: this is really optional, but if we are one of those who sow many types of seeds, it is interesting to put the name of the plant and the date of sowing on a label. Thus, you have good control over everything you have planted to date, and how long they take to germinate.

How is it sown?

Planting parsley seeds is simple. And if you don't believe me you just have to follow this step by step What do I explain to you now:

  1. The first thing is to fill the pot with the substrate almost completely. You have to leave a centimeter or a centimeter and a half (or two at the most) between the surface of the container rim and the surface of the substrate. This should be so that, when you water, the water stays there inside the pot and can be absorbed by the soil.
  2. Then water. You have to pour water until the earth is very wet.
  3. Next, take some parsley seeds and place them on the surface of the substrate. They must be separated from each other. In fact, it is preferable that if, for example, the pot measures about 10 centimeters in diameter, no more than four seeds are put.
  4. Finally, cover them with a very thin layer of soil. And if applicable, insert the label after having written with a permanent marker the planting date and the name of the plant.

Now you have to place the pot in a place where there is a lot of light (it is not necessary that it be exposed to direct sun).

Once the seeds are sown, what's left to do is just water when the soil is dry. And how is that done? Well, since the seeds are small, it is advisable to put a plate under the pot and fill it with water every time we see that the soil is no longer wet.

As you have to be very careful not to overwater, what we will do is check the humidity before doing so. And that can be done in a very simple way, with a simple wooden or plastic stick. If we put it in the pot, when we take it out we can see either that a lot of soil has adhered to it (in which case we will not water), or that it comes out practically clean. How long does parsley take to germinate?

It depends a lot on the temperatures there are and if those seeds are fresh or not. A) Yes, the normal thing is that if they are collected from the plant and planted soon after, they germinate after a few days; but if not, and if it is also autumn or winter, it may take up to a month.

In any case, once they do, we will immediately see that their rate of growth is quite fast, so much so that maybe after a few months we will have to plant them in bigger pots. We will know this if the roots come out through the holes in the seedbed. If it happens, then the transplant will be something that we will have to do in order for them to continue their growth.
