8 outdoor plants resistant to cold and heat

Yellow rose bush, a very resistant plant

If you live in an area where the climate is very hot in summer and cold in winter, you will have no choice but to do a search for plants that can adapt to those conditions. That, or take a look at the ones we recommend.

Outdoor plants resistant to cold and heat are better known than we might think at first.. You do not believe me? Find out for yourself.

Oleander

Oleander is a shrub that adapts to a wide variety of climates

La oleander, whose scientific name is nerium oleander, is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region to China that reaches a maximum height of 6 meters. It is widely cultivated for its low maintenance, but above all for its wonderful flowers which sprout from spring to summer.

It needs a sunny exhibition and two or three weekly waterings. Otherwise, resists cold down to -12ºC and heat up to 40ºC (as long as there is no lack of water).

Japanese maple

Acer palmatum specimen

El japanese maple, whose scientific name is Acer palmatum, is a deciduous shrub or tree -depending on the species- native to East Asia. It reaches a height between 5 and 10 meters, and is characterized by having beautiful palmate leaves that change color in autumn.

It is a plant that needs soil and water with a low pH, between 4 and 6, and a climate with well-differentiated four seasons. That is precisely why I wanted to include it in the list, because although it would not survive in a tropical climate, if the temperature in winter drops below 0 degrees (to -17ºC that it holds) and in summer the mercury rises to 30-34ºC, it can grow well. What's more, mine endure up to 38ºC, but yes: they are planted in akadama and they are irrigated almost daily during the hottest season.

Aspidistra

Aspidistra plant, resistant and adaptable

The aspidistra It is a perennial rhizomatous herbaceous plant native to China, the Himalayas and Japan, formed by long leaves up to 60cm Green color. It produces bluish, violet or ivory flowers but they have no ornamental value since they appear at ground level and are not always visible.

It is one of the most resistant and easy-care plants in the world since it only has to be placed in semi-shade and watered two or three times a week at most. Resists high temperatures (up to 40ºC) and the casualties (up to -10ºC).

Garden plum

Specimens of Prunus cerasifera var. pisardii

El garden plum, whose scientific name is Prunus cerasifera, is a deciduous tree native to central and eastern Europe and central and southwest Asia that reaches a height between 6 and 15 meters. It has very pretty leaves, 4-6cm long, reddish-brown in color. It blooms in early spring.

It likes the sun and grows well in calcareous soils. And if that was not enough, it resists temperatures between 38 and -15ºC without problems.

Carnation

Dianthus caryophyllus in flower

The carnation, whose scientific name is Dianthus caryophyllus, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to southern Europe that reaches a height of 1 meter. Its flowers bloom from spring to almost fall, so having a cheerful patio, balcony or garden is nothing complicated with it.

All you need is to be in a sunny exposure and frequent waterings. It resists heat without problems and frost down to -5ºC.

Lavender

Lavender plants, beautiful and resistant

La lavender essence is a sub-shrubby plant native to the Mediterranean region that can reach a height of 1 meter. Its beautiful purple inflorescences sprout in spring and summer. And do you know what it takes to live?

Very little: direct sun and little water. It resists without difficulty frosts down to -5ºC and high temperatures.

Rosebush

Rose bushes endure frost and high temperatures

El rosebush it is the most popular flowering shrub in the world. Native to Asia, Europe, North America, and Northwest Africa, It is characterized by reaching heights between 2 to 20 meters depending on the species. It produces flowers, generally aromatic, for much of the year, and the best thing is that you just have to put it outside and water it 3-4 times a week in summer and every 4-5 days the rest of the year.

It resists from 38ºC to -12ºC.

Raised palm

Trachycarpus fortunei, a very hardy palm

El raised palm, whose scientific name is Trachycarpus fortunei, is a palm native to central and eastern China that reaches a height of 12 meters. It has a thin trunk about 30-35cm thick, and palmate leaves about 50cm long by 75cm wide.

It is one of the ones that best resists the cold. In fact, it is capable of withstanding up to -17ºC without suffering damage. And if we talk about heat, I can tell you that 38ºC does not affect it either, so it is very interesting for hot and cold climates.

As you can see, there are several plants that resist both cold and heat. Now all you have to do is choose which of these you liked the most and enjoy a splendid garden. Here you have more:

    Thanks for your reply.

      Hi Lucy.
You have to trim the stems in late winter, leaving a few leaves each. This way lower branches will come out.
      A greeting.

    Hello Monica.

I live in the surroundings of Toledo (Spain) at about 620 m of altitude, hot plateau climate in summer with temperatures between 35 and 40º C, and cold in winter with temp. between 5 and -5º C.

The 5-storey building where I live has open ground floors and next to the entrance door, under the roof, there is a built-in planter with a drainage tube, measuring 1,48 × 0,59 × 0,33 m for the earth. (discounting the gravel fill of about 7 cm) that had, since its construction 38 years ago, an ivy that we have removed as invasive and destroying the facade; we have fixed the exterior and emptied the said planter of earth. We have placed 5 bags of 15 K of medium gravel on the bottom and 3 bags of river sand on top of it, so that there is good drainage.

When February or March arrives, we will add the soil and we want to plant something that does not grow too much (1,5-1,8 m max.) That is resistant and at the same time beautiful. I have to say that in the urbanization there is already a lot of grass and various trees, such as yours, arizónicas, some pines, poplars are few, prunes, laurels, etc. and various shrub plants, such as junipers, rose bushes, etc.

You would like to know what types of plants you could choose and what type of soil would suit you.
The planter will not receive direct sun when it is indoors at 4-5 m. from the vertical of the building.
Also when would be the best time to plant and types of compost.

    Thank you very much.

Hello, I live in Ciudad-Real (Spain), where temperatures range between 5, -5 in winter and 35 - 40 in summer. I am looking for a tree that withstands these temperatures and has good shade for a patio of about 20 meters. Which tree can you recommend me?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Julia.
For those temperatures and space, any of these:

      -Koelreutia paniculata
      -Cercis siliquastrum
      -Prunus (like Japanese cherry)
      -Albizia julibrissin
      -Ligustrum lucidum

      A greeting.

At last I found the name of 'Prinus Cerasifera. I will be able to do it in a large pot, on a very sunny terrace and with many plants ... now all I have to do is find it for next spring.
    A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Yoly.
Prunus cerasifera is quite common in nurseries. If you can't find it there, surely you will find it online (ebay, for example).
      Greetings.

    Hello:

I would have written: "eight cold and heat resistant outdoor plants." Otherwise it sounds very strange; inappropriate for this language.

    Thank you.

    Thanks for the valuable information
I am looking for plants that survive between 13ºC to 16ºC in summer and 2ºC to 5ºC in winter, if it is fruit it would be better or which tree would you recommend.

    Greetings.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Andres.

Are those the average temperatures or are they annual? In other words: throughout the year, do temperatures rise or fall further? Is there frost?

In any case, maybe the strawberry tree will suit you (Arbutus unedo), or boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) for instance.

Here there are more trees that resist the cold in case you are interested.

      Greetings.

Hi there! I have a small balcony that gives direct light for about 3 hours a day, what easy-maintenance plants do you recommend? I live in a city with high humidity, with winters with minimum temperatures of 6-9´C and summers of up to 40'C. Thanks!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Carla.

You can put geraniums (of all kinds), carnations, pitimini rose, lavender, robelina palm tree, cicas, ... If you like climbers, you could even put a lattice through which a jasmine (for example) climbs.

      Regards!
