Trees, bushes, palms, flowers. There are so many that it may be very necessary to spend a few days choosing them. To make your work easier, we We are going to recommend 12 types of plants for gardens by the sea.

Before we start I would like to tell you something that I think is important. I live on the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain), about 5 kilometers in a straight line from the coast, and I have relatives who live even closer to the Mediterranean Sea, a few meters away. I am very used to seeing many types of plants that grow near the sea or with maritime influence. Then, The selection that we have made for you is not based only on the knowledge acquired thanks to reading books on the subject, but also and above all on your own experience.

And having said that, now we do begin:

Trees

Trees are the tallest plants in a garden. So they are the first to be planted in it, since then it will be easier to know where to put the others. Some of the most interesting are:

  • Common cypress: the scientific name of this evergreen conifer is Cupressus sempervirens. Its height is about 25-30 meters, and depending on the cultivar it can have a more or less open and rounded crown, or a narrower one. Resists up to -18ºC. See file.
  • Holm oak: botanists call it Quercus ilex. It is an evergreen tree that reaches a height of 16-25 meters. Its crown is semi-spherical, and very dense. It supports well up to -18ºC. See file.
  • Taray or tare: its scientific name is tamarix gallica. It is a 6-8 meter deciduous tree with scale-like leaves that sprout from long, flexible, almost weeping branches. It blooms in spring and summer. Resists up to -12ºC. See file.

Shrubs and the like (bushes)

Shrubs are plants somewhat smaller than trees, so they can be used to form hedges. For a garden by the sea, we recommend the following:

  • Chinese orange blossom: its scientific name is Pitosporum tobira, so another of its common names is pitosporo. It really is a small tree of 7 meters, but it is used a lot as a low shrub since it tolerates pruning. It is evergreen, and its flowers are white, and slightly aromatic. Resists up to -7ºC. See file.
  • Red swab: its scientific name is Callistemon citrinus. It is popularly known as a brush tree or pipe cleaner. It is a shrub or tree that grows about 2-10 meters, but usually does not exceed 4m. It is evergreen, and blooms in spring, producing its showy reddish inflorescences. It resists frosts down to -7ºC. See file.
  • Lavender: There are many types of lavender, but they are all very interesting for your garden. They are subshrubs or bushes that reach an average height of 50 centimeters (some up to 1 meter), which produce lilac flowers during spring and sometimes also in summer. They are well resistant to freezes down to -7ºC. See file.

Palms

Palm trees are elegant and stylish plants. They are one of those that can bring a tropical touch to your garden near the sea. For example, these species tolerate salinity well:

  • Date: the scientific name of this plant is Phoenix dactylifera. It is a generally multi-stemmed plant that can grow up to 30 meters. Its leaves are pinnate and have thorns. It produces edible fruits (dates), and resists up to -7ºC. See file.
  • Palm hearts: its scientific name is Chamaerops humilis. It is a palm tree with several trunks that reaches a height of 4-5 meters. Its leaves are green (or bluish, depending on the variety), and it resists without problems up to -7ºC. See file.
  • washingtonia: both the W. robust and W. filifera, in addition to the hybrid Washingtonia x filibuster which is the most common in Spain for example. They are plants with a single trunk that reach heights of 10-15 meters, with very characteristic fan-shaped leaves, green in color. They resist up to -7ºC. See file.

Flowers

Flowers are those that, in addition to beautifying a garden, brighten our day. They appear especially in spring, but there are some plants that bloom in summer. Our selection is as follows:

  • Altea: its scientific name is Althaea. It is a lively or perennial herb that reaches a height of approximately 1 meter, and its leaves are rounded. The flowers bloom in spring, and can be white or somewhat pink. It resists frosts down to -7ºC. See file.
  • Carnation: there are many types of carnations, but one of the ones that will give you the most joy is the Dianthus caryophyllus. It reaches a height of 45-60 centimeters, and lives for several years. It blooms for a good part of the year, producing reddish or whitish, fragrant flowers. It tolerates frosts down to -4ºC. See file.
  • freesias: they are a genus of bulbous plants whose corm (it is an organ similar to a bulb) is planted in autumn / winter so that they bloom in spring. They reach low heights, of about 30 centimeters including the flower stem. The flowers are aromatic, and of colors that go from white to red, going through orange and yellow. See file.
