Plants for gardens near the sea

When design a garden facing the sea We often have doubts about which plants can live in these conditions, that is, which ones can withstand saline winds, sandy soil and warm temperatures in the case of living in a tropical climate. Although there are many plants that can live in front of the sea, we are going to recommend the ones that are most often used for these cases, which are the ones that have shown to adapt better to live in these conditions.

Palms

We start at palms. These types of plants are ideal to give a tropical, exotic touch to the garden. They are highly recommended, especially if you want to put a deck chair between two specimens and be able to lie down to sunbathe or read.

For example:

• Cocos nucifera. It does not resist cold, but it is the palm tree par excellence of the beaches of the tropics.
• All of the genre Phoenix.
• Robust Washingtonia (which has a thin trunk), and Washingtonia will spin (which has a thick trunk).
• Chamaerops humilis, the Mediterranean palm tree. Resistant to drought.
• Roystonea regia, the Cuban palm tree. It does not resist the cold either, but it can tolerate very mild and very brief frosts of up to -1º, as long as it is an adult and acclimatized specimen.

Trees

There are numerous trees that can live near the sea. For example:

• tamarix (top photo), with a nice pink bloom.
• Eucalyptus. Very fast growing, it adapts to all types of soils.
• Soft tendons y Schinus terebenthifolius, originating in the Mediterranean. They grow fast and resist drought.
• European oil. If in addition to liking trees, you like olives, there is nothing like having an olive tree in the garden.
• Chorisia speciosa, whose flower is reminiscent of those of orchids.

Shrubbery

The shrubbery They are ideal plants for bordering paths, or even if they are specimens with a nice flowering, to have as isolated specimens or in pots. Some of the most appropriate for oceanfront gardens are:

• Plumeria (top photo). A beautiful shrub or tree whose flowers are very ornamental. It does not withstand the cold (but those that are native to California can withstand mild frosts under shelter).
• Rosmarinus officinalis. Rosemary can be used to skirt roads for example, but also as a medicinal plant.
• Pistacea lentiscus. It tolerates drought well, and pruning.
• Lantana camara. A small shrub with very peculiar flowers that will undoubtedly attract the eyes of all members of the household.
• Caesalpinia. The Caesalpinia genre is one of those that simply makes you fall in love. They are very similar to the tree Delonix direction (tropical tree also suitable for living by the sea). The Caesalpinia gilliesi It is suitable for cold climates, since it can withstand up to -5º, while the Caesalpinia pulcherrima (better known in its place of origin as the false flamboyant), it is more appropriate for hot climates as it can withstand frosts as long as they are very mild and being the adult specimen.

Climbers

All the creepers, the ones that get us to win in privacy. They are very ornamental, and fast growing. The ones we have selected for you are:

• bougainvillea glabra (top photo). Little can be said about this beautiful climber that has not already been said. Resistant to drought, with very pretty flowers,… What more could you ask for?
• Passiflora. Although they are ideal for hot climates, we also have some for cold climates, such as Passiflora caerulea.
• plumbago auriculata. The plumbago is a climber whose flowers can be blue or, less common, white. Whether you choose one or the other, it is a plant that will not disappoint you.
• Tecomaria capensis. Also known as Bignonia capensis, its red or yellow bloom is highly ornamental.
• Hedera helix. Who does not know ivy? If there is a resistant and fast-growing climber, it is undoubtedly ivy. A very good option if you need to cover walls as quickly as possible.

Cactus and succulent plants

Cacti and succulents are exceptional. They resist well the conditions of the gardens that are next to the sea, and can also resist light frosts. Although there are many genres, we have selected the following:

• Aeonium. Perhaps one of the most popular plants in all the gardens of the world. There are those that have brown leaves, others green; Some form very compact low bushes, others however grow tall with few branches.
• Aloe. Exceptional. Species such as the well-known Aloe vera, or the not so popular Aloe dichotoma that grows in the shape of a tree, will give a special touch to your garden.
