5 potted trees

Acer palmatum 'Koto no Ito' specimen

When we think of trees we imagine woody plants that reach impressive heights, but did you know that with a little care there are some species that can be grown in pots? Yes Yes. Even if you do not have a land to plant them, you too can enjoy the beauty of these plants.

Choosing them can be very complicated, but for that I'm going to help you by suggesting these five potted trees.

Japanese maple

El japanese maple, whose scientific name is Acer palmatum, is one of the most popular deciduous potting trees. Native to China and Japan, it needs protection from the sun, but it tolerates pruning very well, so much so that it is widely used as bonsai. To grow well, it must be planted in a substrate for acidic plants, or, if you live in an area where the summer is especially hot (30ºC or more) in akadama mixed with 30% kiryuzuna. Resists up to -17ºC, but temperatures above 30ºC seriously harm you if the substrate is not suitable. It cannot live in a tropical or subtropical climate. More information in the link.

Albizia julibrissin

Albizia julibrissin tree

La Albizia julibrissin, known as the Silk Tree or Acacia of Constantinople, is a deciduous tree native to Asia. It is very ornamental, as it has a thin trunk about 30cm thick and up to 12 meters high, and a parasol crown made up of green or brown leaves (the 'Summer Chocolate' variety) that fills with flowers in spring. Despite its characteristics, it can live perfectly in large flowerpots, in a sunny position and protected from strong frosts. Supports up to -7ºC.

Flamboyan

Delonix regia, a potted tree

El flamboyan, whose scientific name is Delonix direction, is an evergreen or deciduous tree (depending on the climate) native to Madagascar that reaches a height of 12 meters. It has a parasol glass that gives very good shade. Despite its characteristics, it tolerates pruning very well so that can be kept in large pots, in full sun and protected from frost.

Golden shower (for hot climates)

Cassia fistula in flower

The golden rain tree for hot climates, whose scientific name is Cassia fistula, is a deciduous plant native to Egypt, the Middle East and warm areas of Asia. It reaches a height between 6 and 20 meters, with a highly branched crown. It must be in large pots, in a sunny position and in a place where the temperature does not drop below -1ºC.

Laurel

Laurus nobilis, a potted tree

El laurel, whose scientific name is Laurus nobilis, is an evergreen shrub or tree native to the Mediterranean region that reaches a height of up to 10 meters. Its crown is very branched, something that is good to know since its leaves are used a lot in the kitchen. Grown in a pot, it will become a very decorative plant that will not need much care: just a sunny location, and a moderate frequency of watering. Resists up to -12ºC.

Hello Monica, your article is very interesting. I am thinking of planting some of these potted trees since I don't have much land in a house in Santa Fe (Argentina). Japanese Maple and Laurel I get them but I'm not sure about the other species. For example the golden shower. Does it suit the Santa Fe type of climate with very hot summers and frosty winters? Thanks a lot !!!

      Hi Ricardo.
The Golden Rain (Cassia fistula) only supports up to -1ºC. The Laburnum anagyroides it does resist a lot more and is very similar - in fact, it is called the same golden shower.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica. The tree under the title, what's its name? It is before you start naming the trees. Thanks a lot!!

      Hello Jorge.
It is a variety of japanese maple, an Acer palmatum var. dissectum. In the link you have information about these trees, care, pests, etc.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica, it could also be the «euphorbia cotilifonia»? Popularly known in
Mexico, like Sangre Libanes or de Cristo, is very "burrito" or "rustic". Its reproduction seems very simple to me, in addition to its beautiful and distinctive red leaves that characterize it, something similar to the Japanese Maple, what do you think?

      Hello J. Ernesto.
Yes, without problem. The Euphorbia cotinifolia It is a very easy plant to keep in a pot 🙂.
      A greeting.

Hello, good afternoon. How big should the pot be?

      Hi Cany.

It depends on the size of the tree. If it is a young specimen that is 50 centimeters tall, probably a 40cm diameter pot will serve you for a few years; On the other hand, if it measures 2 or 3 meters, then you have to look for a larger pot, 50, 60 or even more centimeters in diameter.

      Greetings.
