Pruning of aromatic plants

Leaves of the peppermint plant

One of the most important care that we must provide to our aromatic plants is pruning. If we didn't, they would end up growing very ungainly, and they wouldn't produce as many leaves as we would be interested in.

With this in mind, when you finish reading this article you will know everything about the pruning aromatic plants: what is the best time, how to do it,… and much more.

What are aromatic plants?

Lavender in bloom

Aromatic plants are herbs, shrubs and sub-shrubs whose leaves give off a pleasant aroma, and which can be used to flavor dishes. Most of them can be had both indoors and outdoors, which is why they are often planted in pots or planters. Some examples are lavender, bay leaf, peppermint, or thyme.

The general care they need are:

  • Irrigation: every 2 days in summer, and every 4-6 days the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from spring to summer, with organic fertilizers. If they are on land, we can use powdered fertilizers, such as manure or worm castings, adding a 2-3cm thick layer every month; On the other hand, if they are in a pot, we will use liquid fertilizers, guano being especially recommended for its rapid effectiveness.
  • Transplant or planting time: in spring.

Pruning shears

The best time to prune them is when they finish blooming. To do this, you can use pruning scissors like the ones you see in the image above if it is woody plants (such as laurel), or scissors to prune flowers in the case that they are herbaceous or have very thin stems, less than 0,5cm thick.

With them you have to cut those stems that look weak or sick, and also those that are broken. In addition, the height of the plant should be lowered, allowing five to six pairs of leaves to grow and cutting 2 or a maximum of 3.

This way your plants will grow much stronger 🙂.
