Prunus cerasifera, rustic and beautiful like few others

Prunus cerasifera in flower

The genus of the Prunus includes very interesting species, such as the almond tree (Almond), whose flowers are white, or the Prunus, whose fruit, the apple, has an exquisite flavor. But there is another that is so beautiful and so rustic that it has begun to be planted in gardens, both public and private; in addition to using it to decorate streets and avenues.

Its name is garden plum, although perhaps its other name sounds more familiar to you: Prunus cerasifera.

Prunus cerasifera

El Prunus cerasifera It is a deciduous tree, that is, it loses its leaves in autumn-early winter, native to Europe and Asia. It grows to a height of 7-10 meters, with leaves up to 6cm long. This species is one of the first to welcome spring. Its beautiful flowers are about 2cm in diameter, have five petals and are pink or white. The fruit is an edible drupe about 3cm in diameter, red or yellow, which ripens in early autumn.

Due to its beauty, many cultivars have been developed, such as Prunus cerasifera »Pissardi» and Prunus cerasifera »Nigra», both with purple leaves and pink flowers. There is another very beautiful one that is Prunus cerasifera »Lindsayae», which has pink flowers and green leaves. prunus nigra

In cultivation it is a very grateful and adaptable plant, which can grow without problems in limestone soils as long as they have sufficient humidity. In this way, it is important that the waterings are regularespecially during the summer. Likewise, it is highly recommended to fertilize it from spring to late summer with an organic fertilizer, be it guano, horse manure or worm humus. Due to its size, it is not convenient to have it in a pot ... in theory 🙂. The truth is that it is a tree that can also be worked as bonsai, so if you wish, you can grow it in pot as a small tree, pruning it in early spring, before it resumes its growth. In addition, it resists until the -18ºC. What more could you want?
