The tree that I am going to present to you today is one of those species that we can find in parks or in the green areas of cities and towns. Its bearing is different from the others, since its branches fall down instead of growing upright as if they wanted to touch the sky with the tips of the leaves.
If you are looking for a unique plant, put a Weeping willow in your home and… enjoy its shade!
This majestic tree is native to Asia, mainly China, and is known by the botanical name of salix babylonica. Its dimensions are immense, since it can grow up to a height of twenty meters with a 6-7m diameter crown. The leaves, which are lanceolate with a green beam and a glaucous underside, measure around 15cm and can fall in autumn. If this happens, don't worry: is normal willow behavior; in spring it will sprout again. In mild climates, on the other hand, you are likely to keep them.
Although it is usually planted closer to ponds, the truth is that can grow without difficulty in all types of environments. To give you an idea of how resistant they are, I will tell you that where I live - Mediterranean climate, warm with light frosts and dry with very little rainfall - they planted one near a restaurant years ago, and there it is. It should also be added that it cannot be ignored that the weeping willow loves water, and that the better access to it, the better its growth and development will be; but… for this same reason it is important that it be planted at a minimum distance of 15 meters (around) from any construction or pipes.
When talking about pests and diseases, it is important to say that it is highly recommended to do preventive treatments from a young age, since they usually attack mealybugs, aphids, and fungi such as powdery mildew. A good fertilizer calendar throughout the growing and watering season will largely prevent our precious tree from being in that situation.
The weeping willow easily reproduces by cuttings, in autumn or spring. You just have to cut a branch that is about a pencil thick, and with a pair of scissors remove a little of the bark from the bottom. Then, infuse it with rooting hormones, and plant it in a pot with a porous substrate, protected from the sun. In no time you will have a new copy.
What did you think of the Weeping Willow?
I think that at least sideways you should warn of the strength and size of the roots of this tree, so that people who read you are warned.
Hello Ruth.
You're right; is already set.
Thank you very much, and happy weekend!
Without a doubt, it is the perfect tree. I grew up with them in my children, if I had a place, he would be the first, thank you
It is a very beautiful tree 🙂.
Wow, I would like to have a specimen of this tree, how can I get a seedling? I love trees.
Hello Maria.
Where are you from? In principle, it is usually found in nurseries. But if this were not the case in your case, perhaps you could have more luck looking at online nurseries in your country.
Greetings and good luck.
