How to recover a dry tree?

The dry tree does not always recover

If for any reason the tree we have at home has started to dry upEither due to having placed too much water on it, it is in a place where it receives a lot of sun, some liquid has fallen that could have caused damage, lack of water or any other reason that has been the cause of the plant is in the state of drought, you must follow these tips.

If you are one of those people who prefer save the plant Instead of getting rid of it, in this article we show you some of the solutions to recover a dry tree or a plant that is in this state.

How can you recover a dry potted tree?

Brianda plants that are planted in pots we can start with the following:

  1. The first thing to do is pierce the earth with a small shovel, a spoon or any other utensil that can fulfill the function. After going through the earth we dig somewhat wide holes to allow the flow of water, of course being very careful with the roots.
  2. After this the pot must be immerse in a bucket of water that it is at a medium temperature until the earth is completely humid; that is, after an average more or less. When we observe that the earth cannot absorb more water, we remove the plant from the bucket and place it on a flat surface so that the excess drains off.
  3. With a water spray, we spread each and every one of the leaves of our plant with it, taking into account that this is a treatment that requires a lot of patience. There is no need to be anxious about the results.

To know if the recovery has had any effect, we can observe the plant after a few days, we will have noticed that the stems come back to life and the leaves have begun to take on their green color.

How to recover a dry bonsai?

Dry bonsai will be difficult to recover

In the case of bonsai and although they are small, they are also plants considered trees but smaller. If for some reason the bonsai has completely dried up, there is a way to recover it.

The first step we must take is remove the leaves that have not been able to fall by themselves. This helps to prevent further loss of moisture. Following this we must completely submerge the bonsai pot in water for approximately half an hour. After that time has elapsed we take our tree out of the water and put it in an inclined position to remove excess of this, and finally we place the bonsai with everything and the pot inside a transparent plastic bag and close it.

We need to keep in mind that the bag must not have any direct contact with the tree and you have to avoid placing compost until it begins to recover, so this is a process that can take days or even months for the growth of its leaves to be seen again, but there is no problem, you just have to have some patience .

How to recover a dry garden tree?

In the case of larger trees, the procedure is similar, with the difference that we will not be able to remove it from the place where it is planted.

The solution in this case would be, mainly to move the earth a little with the help of a shovel, as we mentioned earlier, taking care with the roots. This will help the water have a greater fluencyAfter this step, we water the plant enough to keep the soil moist. It is important to make a tree grate first of all so that the water stays next to the tree and can be absorbed by the roots.

After this step, there are those who subject the tree to a series of special injection treatments depending on the state of drought that it may have. Of course, this is a treatment that is professionally implemented by professionals, who they use a plastic injector which is inserted into the trunk of the tree. Anyway, it's not necessary.

Is it possible to recover a dry cypress?

When a cypress or other conifer begins to dry up, then I am very sorry to tell you that it will be a little difficult to get it back. Why? Because they are a type of tree that tends to cut a lot to recover from a drought, and even more so from a fungal attack. That is why there is so much insistence that they be planted in well-drained soils, since waterlogging, as well as very compact soils, are lethal for the vast majority of species.

So is there anything that can be done? Yes, sure, but only if it's still green. In these cases We will have to see if what has happened is that he has passed thirst, or if, on the contrary, he has received more water than he is capable of absorbing. To do this, we will simply take a wooden or plastic stick, insert it into the earth, and when extracting it we will see if it is dry or not. If it is, we will water; and if not, we will apply a fungicide such as Aliette (for sale here) to try to save the cypress.

And what to do if we want to recover a dry boxwood?

Boxwood is a shrub that can dry out quickly.

Image - Wikimedia / SB_Johnny

To finish, we are going to explain what to do to save a boxwood that is dry or that is drying up. If it has dry leaves, even if it has healthy branches, we will not cut them; but if they start to look bad too, then yes we will prune them.

Then, We will look to see how the earth is (dry or humid), and based on that we will take the appropriate measures; that is, irrigate or suspend irrigation and apply systemic fungicide.

It will not always be possible to recover a dry tree, but I hope that these tips will be useful to you to know how you can, at least, try.

When a tree is transplanted, is it necessary to make the well a few days before transplanting it? Is it good to put about 3 or 4 kg of corn under and around the transplanted tree so that when it rots it can be used as fertilizer for it? Thank you !!

Hello, I have two soursop trees in a pond, they gave a lot of fruit, one day he came to my house and the manager had cut several thick branches because the weight of the fruit touched the ground and he thought it was the best. Since then, two years ago the trees that are huge almost did not bear fruit last year, and this year they are almost without leaves, new ones are coming out but I see them half dry of course not a fruit anymore. What I can do?

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hello Ana Maria.

I recommend you pay them in spring and summer, with compost-type fertilizers, mulch. This way you will get them to take out new roots, and therefore to get stronger. In this way, new branches will sprout and produce fruit.

And patience 🙂 Courage, sooner or later they will bear fruit again.

        Greetings.

Hello, good night, can someone help me, I have a Montezuma pine tree in a pot and it begins to dry.

          1.    Monica Sanchez said

            Hello marisol.
In order to help you I need to know the following:
-How often do you water it?
-Do you have it in a pot or on the ground? If it is potted, does it have holes in the base?

In general, pines are sunny and do not usually like excess water, but if they are watered little it does not suit them either.

I leave you the link of the pines file in case it can be of help. Click here.

            Greetings.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Rafael.

Have you checked if it has any plagues? In the leaves there could be mealybugs o aphids. In summer they are common. By clicking on the links you will find information about these pests, and how to combat them.

If you don't have anything, then write to us and we will help you.

I have a Cinacina or Brea that flowered and after a few days it began to dry out. We started to increase the water inputs, but despite having green branches, the buds do not sprout. Do you have a solution or will it end up drying out?

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hi, Franz.

Sorry, but by those names I don't know which tree you mean. Is it Parkinsonia? If so, this tree resists drought much better than excess water, so if it is still green, I recommend watering it little, once or twice a week. Of course, every time you water, pour water until the soil is very moist.

        regards

  3.   lourdes sarmiento said

Eduardo Vega, you can make the well a few days before or if you want at the same time that you are going to transplant the tree.

Miguel bohorquez lopez, we are very happy that it worked. Once your plant is fully revived, it's a good time to remove the plastic.

Hello, and if we put it in the bag it won't water? I have an olive tree that also dried up, and they told me to leave it in a dark place, and water it every 3 days, now I see a color like black in the twigs, it is not sprouting. at the beginning where the leaf comes out, there are some not in all the branches. I have to give it or not, I transplant it and water it every 4 days when I see the dry land, I don't know if I'm doing it right, do I have to water it or not?

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hi Lupe.

Yes, when the soil is dry you have to water it so that it does not dehydrate. Anyway, check it out from time to time homemade rooting agents to help you grow new roots.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

Hello, good night, I have a tangerine tree ... it had given me fruit ... but I have a dog that pees in the yard and goes straight to the root soil of the tree. until it dried..please what can I do..thank you very much ..

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Norma.
To prevent the dog from getting close to the tree, you can protect it with metal mesh (grid).
I also recommend changing the chlorine for water with vinegar (more or less equal parts), since it is not harmful to the plant.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Miguel Angel.
How long has it been dry? If it has been more than 5 months, I recommend you scratch the trunk or branches a little: if they are not green, nothing can be done 🙁
In the case of less weather, water it up to 3 times a week in summer and up to 2 times a week the rest of the year. Uses homemade rooting agents to help you cast new roots.
      Good luck.

I have an orange tree that began to dry out because I put lime on the trunk and almost all its branches were burned when I took it out, the roots are very clear and not dry, now I don't know how to recover it provisionally I put it in a bucket with water and cover it with a black bag.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Emilio.
I recommend you remove the bag, since due to the plastic it will not be able to breathe and the fungi could weaken it more.
Add powdered rooting hormones (or homemade rooting agents) around the trunk and water. This will help it to emit new roots.
      Everything else is waiting.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Javier.
I would recommend watering it more times: 3-4 per week.
Fertilize it with a liquid organic fertilizer, such as guano for example, following the instructions specified on the package.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Juan Carlos.
Perhaps they were not explained well. Nothing should be nailed to the plants.
I recommend you remove the iron, and treat it with a fungicide (for fungi).
      And then to wait.
      Cheer up.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Sofia.

Hello. I have a seedling (young tree) that I saved from the undergrowth of a road that they were going to cut.
The fact is that it has 2 trunks but one of them was dry, broken, much lower than the other and dark brown when the other is green.
I decided to cut a little below the break, leaving a small stump of a inch or two. When I cut it I was able to verify that it is indeed dry since it was not green inside, but I would like to know if it can close again when the roots are alive and the other trunk is well or if I cut it completely.

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hi Mabel.
Have you looked if it has any pests on its leaves? In the event that it has, it is advisable to treat it with a universal insecticide, or with diatomaceous earth.

If you have it in a pot, I recommend you move it to a larger one or to the ground if you can.

          Greetings.

Good afternoon, I have a prunus pissardi that is drying, I watered it 2 to 3 times a week, it was always without leaves, it never recovered since I transplanted it, it gradually lost the leaves, now the branches are dry, I think it was Due to excess water, the upper part of the earth always looked dry, but when I inserted a humidity meter it told me that it was wet, apparently when the neighbors wash their garage (where the cars go) the water seeps through the pavement and it keeps the subsoil very humid, the question is what to do, I am thinking of removing it to check roots, cut the roots that are bad and plant it in a pot or bag applying a rooting agent ... do you think it can be saved? Should I cut the dry branches? Greetings

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Gaston.
If you are in the southern hemisphere, yes, I recommend you take it out and plant it in a pot; in case you are in the northern hemisphere it is better to wait for the summer to pass.

Hello, I have an olive tree that has dried for about 1 year and does not give green leaves. In fact, not all the dry ones were pruned. We scratch the tree and it is dry. Nothing green. What if they have put a bandaged grease in the middle for the ants. Question that at the bottom near the base, if large green branches grow. But from the middle of the tree upwards everything is dry! Can something be done or did the tree die? If I cut it halfway? Greetings

      1.    Monica Sanchez said

        Hi Jaro.

If he has any green branches, cut back on whatever is dry and leave only those branches. As you get more you can give shape to its glass, which is recommended to be rounded and somewhat open as it is what it would have if it had not had half of the trunk dry.

        If in doubt, contact us.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Martha.
Where are you from? If you live in an area with a climate without frost, keep it outside, in semi-shade. Take it out of the bag, and don't spray it. Just water it 2-3 times a week.
In the case of living in an area where temperatures drop below 0 degrees, keep it in a bright room, without direct light, and away from drafts. Also, do not spray it, and take it out of the bag. Water it 1-2 times a week.

I have been told to sprinkle it with garlic water, I don't know if it works, well I'll take into account the removal of the earth. What else can you recommend? Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ferley.
If you have the sadness virus there's no cure.
Garlic water will not harm it, but I would recommend more treating it with a broad spectrum insecticide, and watering it with homemade rooting agents so that it can emit new roots, which will give it strength.

There is a spectacular tree at home, I would say a bush, its leaves are purple, its name is Aster, I suddenly noticed that one of its branches is drying up although at the base it has new twigs. Tell me what strong fertilizer I can apply to it, like hormones or something. I am sad, that tree attracted the attention of all those who pass in front of my house.Thank you for the help

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Canio.
If you are sick you first have to know what illness you have to treat it. You should never fertilize a diseased plant as it would weaken it more.
If you want, send us a photo of the plant to our Facebook and we tell you.
      A greeting.

hello I have a very beautiful pine that I bought for Christmas a few weeks ago it is drying up how can I help it.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Guillermina.
First of all, if you have it inside the house, I recommend taking it outside, in semi-shade. These plants are not adapted to living indoors.
Then, water it once or twice a week, depending on whether it rains frequently or not in your area.

And finally, it's time to wait.

      Luck.

Hello Monica, I have a lemon tree 4 seasons of 3 years almost 3 meters high and the leaves began to fall and now it is drying from top to bottom and the trunk is turning brown on the outside, the leaves and the lemons are dry, can you help me Thank you.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Roberto.
From what you count, I could have the sadness virus already quite advanced 🙁

But just in case it wasn't, I would recommend treating it with a universal insecticide.

      Regards and good luck.

Good afternoon: I have a Chilean pine or Araucaria 6 years and 5 meters high and 3 months ago the leaves of the low branches began to dry, it is watered 2 times a week and more than half of the branches have almost all the dry leaves, what can I do or what do you recommend, thanks in advance!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Jesus.
If they are the lower leaves it is normal, do not worry. As it grows, it will lose the old leaves, that is, those that are lower, and it will remove new ones from the top.

Anyway, and just in case, it would not hurt to treat it with a universal fungicide (it is for fungi).

      A greeting.

We have a mango that was just growing and we moved it, now its leaves are drying ...

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Francisco.
I recommend you water it with homemade rooters (in this link we talked about it). This will help it to emit new roots that will give it strength.

By the way, don't over water it. The soil must be kept slightly damp, but not flooded, since otherwise the roots will rot.

      A greeting.

I have a bonsai that is beginning to decline, the idea is to try with the bag, I would like to know what is the optimal space to leave it inside the bag to try to recover it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria.
Do you have green leaves yet? Is that if you have them, with the bag you will lose them, and that would be a problem because it would further aggravate the situation.

In that case, I would recommend watering with rooting hormones, every time the substrate is dry or almost dry.

If it is a bonsai that is already running out of leaves, you can try to recover it by covering it with a black plastic bag, but first you must spray it with lime-free water. Keep it in a place protected from the sun, and cover it a little every day so that the air is renewed, which will prevent the appearance of fungi.

      And wait 🙂

      Greetings.

Hello, they totally cut down a tree about 35 years old. As soon as I realized it, I poured water on it in the hope that it didn't die totally. Is there anything I can do to make it sprout?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi carmen.

Ugh, at 35 years old it must have been a good-sized tree

You can water it to see if it sprouts, from time to time (2-3 times a week in summer, and every 7-10 days the rest of the year). But don't flood it.

And to see if there is luck.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Elmer.

Given the circumstances, I recommend if you can take a hose, turn on the tap and clean the tree with the water that comes out consciously.

Then wait. Hopefully you are lucky and be saved.

      Regards!

    Hello,

I have a potted magnolia tree that I can't transplant into the ground. We went to town for two weeks on vacation and when we returned, we found it almost dry (both leaves and branches), but it still has some green leaves and the branches have flexibility. We should totally prune the dry branches or only from the most affected area. Likewise, I do not know if we should remove all the dry leaves and leave it with the ones that are still green. Finally, we are not clear if we should change the pot and its sutrato completely and / or transplant it to the ground, or better leave it to recover for some time.
    Thank you very much.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Javier.

You can remove the branches that are completely dry, also the dead leaves.
For now, it is best to leave it in the pot, until it recovers. A transplant now could weaken you even more.

      Regards!

      Hello Josue.

It is best to plant it in a pot with soil, as the roots can rot if they are in water.

    Good Morning.
Please your support to help me:

I have a Crypto market, when I bought it almost three weeks ago they told me that it was called TREE CHAPARRO, but I helped me with an application to detect plants and I was able to locate its real name. It is small but its trunk is slightly thick, at first its leaves were not as rigid as now. I have it in my room, which is very bright, the sun's rays do not hit it, but there is a lot of lighting. As I did not know what its name was and I could not investigate about its care, I watered it little, already when I knew what it was, I water it every two days, but I have read that it needs enough water.

I would like to know what I should do because I have noticed that its leaves are hard, not dry but hard, as very rigid, I don't remember how they were when I bought it, but I don't want it to dry out and die.

I have seen that it is like bonsai. Please help.
    Thanks <3

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ramona.

Yes, it's cryptomeriaIt is a plant that, in order to grow well, must be outside, since indoors it cannot adapt. Withstands frost without problem. In the link you have information about this plant, as well as its basic care.

      Greetings.

I have a tree called Dollar, it is drying up and losing grip, but it is not due to lack of water, I already tried to chop the earth, remove excess soil at the root to give it sun, I do not want it to die, it is 5 years old. life any recommendation to save it

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi John.

Is your tree the Eucalyptus cinerea? By the dollar tree name it shows me that Google.

Look to see if it has any pests. The roots are better not to manipulate them, because if they suffer damage the plant would suffer.

Do you have it in a pot or on the ground? If it's potted, you may need a larger one if you haven't transplanted it in over two years.

      Greetings.

I await comments, thank you very much

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Julieta.

We are sorry to tell you that if it is already dry it is impossible to do anything for it. Conifers (pines, cypresses, firs, etc.) are plants that when they are bad, or measures are taken as soon as the first symptoms are detected (dry tops for example) or they can no longer be saved.

      Greetings.

Hello, I have a ficus that breaks the branches and you sound dry, it still has green leaves but few. I have it outside in the front garden and recently I changed it from a pot to a larger one. I thought he would recover but nothing has happened. What should I do and how much should I water it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Tamara.

How often do you water it? If you have a plate under it, it is important that you remove any excess water after each watering.
When watering it is also important that the soil is able to absorb the water, since otherwise it will not reach all the roots well and the plant will dry out.

You can apply a biostimulant, to gain strength.

      Regards!

Hello, I have a bonsai but they forgot to put it in and it gave it the sun and it seems that it is drying out, are there any probabilities that it will save with the procedure or not? : c

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Camila.
How long was it in the sun? If it was only one day, it is likely that you will recover little by little.
Don't water it too much, as the soil has to dry out a bit before each watering.
      Luck.

My tangerine has called the leaves and I think it is due to excess water ... how do I recover it? PLEASE ... thanks a thousand ...
    ?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria.
If you think that it has been watered too much, you have to stop watering for a few days, so that the soil dries up.
It is also highly recommended to treat it with a spray fungicide, as fungi enjoy humid environments and can do a lot of damage to the plant.

Anyway, I leave you this article to know if it has been overwatered, or if on the contrary it needs water.

      Greetings.

Hello, I have a Guama tree, so we call it in Cauca Colombia, it happens that it was very leafy until about two months ago, it began to dry up, it does not lack water, it was giving small fruit shoots, and I do not know what happened to the tree the only thing it was a routine pruning, it still has leaves, but they turn yellow, and they fall it is a big tree.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Daniel.

You mean the inga edulis, truth? (By clicking on the link you can see its file, in case you are interested).

Have you checked if it has any pests on its leaves? And when was it pruned? It is that if the pruning was done when it was blooming or already with the fruits, surely the pruning weakened it and it needs time to recover. Therefore, it is important to prune after harvesting.

To help it, you can fertilize it once a month by throwing mulch or compost around the trunk, for example.

      Luck.
