Rockrose, a very resistant and low maintenance shrub

Jara Flowers

At first glance the Rockrose it looks like one more bush than many that we see around us. With a large number of flowers that embellish it and a dark and bright green that gives it life. But if we get closer it is possible to notice its fleshy and thick leaves.

Here is the key to this plant that, unlike many others, has the great ability to adapt to drought without problems. Through a double root system the Jara has adapted to nature to survive.

The power of Jara

Cistus salviifolius

El Jara is actually the cistu salviifolius, an evergreen shrub that you should consider if you live in dry and hot places due to its high resistance. In some places the Jara is known as Moorish Jaguarzo or Sage Leaf Rockrose and it is one of those plants that supports almost everything, being able to survive in Mediterranean, mountainous, continental climates or looking at the sea.

It is a species that resists frost, medium and intense drought as well as winds being able to adapt in addition to the poorest soils, to those very dry, to sandy, clayey, stony soils and a loamy texture. Now, if we talk about the best conditions that we can offer you, of course there are others: a Soil with good drainage, neutral pH will be ideal.

The Jara is a low maintenance shrub it only needs to be located in the right place, that is, fully or partially exposed to the sun. It will be enough with a sporadic irrigation to survive because, as I told you above, it has a double root system that allows you to draw water from deeper layers of the soil. One of the systems, the longest, is the one developed first. When mature, the second root system begins to develop, which is nourished by water that will eventually fall from the rain. Finally, the aerial part of the leaves develops. This process can be slow but if you are patient you will have a resistant and easy-care bush.

Jara care

The Jara can grow in the ground but also in pots, massifs, rockery and borders. Its power of adaptation has no limits, although it must be taken into account that the adult plant reaches a width of up to 99 cm and a similar height.

La flowering occurs during spring and summer and multiplication is by seeds during spring or by cuttings in autumn. The Jara flowers are white with a yellow center and contrasts with the gray-green color of the leaves, which also have laudanum, a somewhat sticky resin that has a characteristic aroma. The laudanum is used to make perfumes and incenses.

Although a fertilizer is not necessary, you can do it from time to time. The same happens with pruning which, although it is not a necessary condition, is always good during the training stage in order to eliminate the tips. Then, it is possible to carry out maintenance pruning and after flowering.
