Our annual, biennial or perennial herbaceous protagonists depending on how cold the winter is, native to western and southern Mediterranean Europe including the islands (Balearic Islands, Corsica and Sardinia), as well as from North Africa to Pakistan. Today it has naturalized in central and northern Europe, North Africa, North America, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

His scientific name is Tragopogon porrifolius, although they are better known by salsifís, oyster plant, goat's beard, oyster plant, verbaja or Villaviciosa rosette. They are characterized by reaching a height from 30 to 1,5 meters. The leaves are linear to lanceolate in shape and measure 15-40cm. The flowers are grouped in 3-4cm long chapters and are pink in color. They have a sturdy, tapered root that is edible.

If you want to have a copy, we recommend that you provide it with the following care:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: universal growing substrate mixed with 30% perlite.
    • Garden: it is indifferent as long as it has good drainage.
  • Irrigation: every 1-2 days in summer and every 4-5 days the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from spring to autumn with ecological fertilizers.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring. Direct sowing in a seedbed placed outside, in full sun.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -4ºC.
