Is a Schefflera bonsai possible?

Schefflera is a very ornamental shrub or tree that is grown especially indoors but is also a very interesting garden plant - and I tell you this from experience. But ... is it possible to work it as bonsai?

If we stick to the teachings of the classical masters, we will quickly realize that it is not highly recommended since the leaves are much larger than recommended (in fact, the smaller they are, the easier the job will be for us). Even so, Schefflera bonsai are not complicated as it might seem at first. Find out why.

The Schefflera is an evergreen plant native to New Guinea, Java and Taiwan that in its natural state can reach a height of about 3-5 meters, but when worked as bonsai it is not allowed to exceed 40-60cm (there may be some of 1m, but they are the least).

When you have one, the first thing you have to do is reduce the size of the leaves, what you do is remove it completely every 3 years at the beginning of summer (June in the northern hemisphere). In this way it will take out smaller and smaller leaves. In addition, it is necessary to cut the branches that have an excessive growth, and those that are not going to be needed for the design.

Towards the end of winter, the roots will be pruned, cutting less than half, and it will be planted in a pot that will become smaller and smaller (less tall) with a 100% akadama substrate. When finished, it must be placed in semi-shade. Three months later you can start to pay with a liquid fertilizer for bonsai following the instructions specified on the package.

In the case of living in an area where frosts are registered, it will be necessary to protect it inside the house, in a very bright room and away from drafts.

Grateful for this information. I have a plant for a while that has developed an interesting stem and I was wondering if I could grow it as a bonsai. It will be just 40 to 50 inches tall confined to a medium pot. Greetings!
